Question:
What is the role of role models in human life, and who is the best role model?
The Rational Basis of Following Role Models
Every human being has goals in life, but given limited time, conflicting information, and the risk of error, one cannot independently find the perfect path. Reason dictates that we look to successful figures, learn from their experiences, and thereby avoid mistakes. Throughout history, identifying role models has been a natural and rational human approach to success.
Criteria for Choosing a Role Model
A wise person naturally seeks the most knowledgeable and trustworthy guide. When the goal is eternal salvation, one must turn to the Creator, who alone knows the best path. God Himself has introduced humanity to its role models.
The Infallible Role Model
The Qur’an explicitly introduces the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) as an excellent example (uswah hasanah) [i]. The Prophet and his Household are divinely protected from error [ii]. This makes them the most reliable role models, combining complete knowledge with flawless character.
Examples of Their Virtues
- The Prophet Muhammad, known as al-Amīn (the Trustworthy), was famed for his honesty even before his mission [iii]. Despite being the greatest of humanity, he sat humbly among his companions without distinction [iv].
- His successor, Imam ʿAlī (peace be upon him), was renowned for justice, compassion, and generosity—so much so that even non-Muslims praised him as the “voice of human justice” [vi], saying he was killed because of his uncompromising fairness [vii]. He would not wrong even an ant by taking a single grain unjustly [viii].
- Imam al-Hasan (peace be upon him) gave away half of his wealth to charity—twice in his lifetime [ix], surpassing ordinary human generosity.
- The Ahl al-Bayt consistently demonstrated humility, mercy, forgiveness, and selfless service. They sat with the poor [x], forgave faults [xi], and never showed anger for personal reasons [xii].
These examples are not isolated; the lives of all the Imams are masterpieces of devotion and moral excellence.
Beyond Time and Place
Role modeling transcends direct presence. Even those who lived centuries ago remain timeless examples, for values such as honesty, justice, and humility never expire. The Ahl al-Bayt’s lives provide universal principles for every generation.
Fruits of Proper Role Modeling
The influence of the Imams’ companions—like Salmān al-Fārsī, Abū Dharr, and Mālik al-Ashtar—proves the transformative power of following them. Their discipleship turned them into exemplary figures themselves.
Even today, those who emulate the Ahl al-Bayt walk the straight path in personal life and society. Where no explicit precedent exists, the Imams instructed us to rely on reason, knowledge, and consultation with scholars—ensuring their legacy guides us in all times.
Conclusion
One of the most important factors in success is choosing a proper role model. For eternal happiness, the need is even greater. God has provided the perfect guides: the Prophet Muhammad and his purified Household. Reason leads us to embrace their light, walking in their footsteps toward salvation and everlasting bliss.
