Kindness to the Father

Baker, the son of Saleh, says: I had a son-in-law who wrote a letter to Imam Jawad (peace be upon him) in which he expressed:

“My father is an enemy of the Ahl al-Bayt and holds corrupt beliefs. He mistreats me and causes me much harm.

My master! First, I ask you to pray for me! Also, what is your opinion on this matter? Should I expose him and reveal his corrupt beliefs and bad behavior to others, or should I be patient with him and treat him kindly?”

Imam Jawad (peace be upon him) replied:

“I understand the content of your letter and what you have written regarding your father. Of course, by the will of Allah, I will not neglect to pray for you. But know this: patience and kind treatment are better for you than exposing him and revealing his faults. Also, know that after every hardship comes ease. Be patient, for the best outcome belongs to the pious. May Allah keep you steadfast in your love for the Ahl al-Bayt! We and you are under the protection of Allah, and the Lord also protects His seekers.”

Baker says:

“After that, Allah changed the heart of my son-in-law’s father to the extent that I never saw him oppose his beliefs again.”
