The holy month of Ramadan is a month\nof struggle with self, a month to control one\u2019s desires. And now is the opportunity to hold a great\nand magnificent Eid celebration. This\nfestival is the Islamic Eid al-Fitr, which Allah has placed for all Muslims,\nmaking them participants in this blessed celebration.(1) This is an Eid in which obedience of Allah is\nobserved, where Muslims of all races and social classes stand as brothers in\nthe line of servant hood to Allah and pray. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the day of Eid al-Fitr, most\nMuslims across the world are proud to have successfully completed the month of\nRamadan and be showered with its spiritual benefits. On this day, we thank Allah for completing\none of the greatest classes in Islamic training, offered during the one month. We thank Him for allowing us to benefit from\nits lessons to the extent of our understanding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A true Muslim has benefited most on\nthis day, in that he\/she returns victorious from a very sensitive and dangerous\nstruggle (Jihad). This struggle is the\nundying struggle with self, and its animalistic desires and pleasures. In order to win victoriously on this\nbattleground, one must restrain the self from lust, from eating and drinking,\nfrom unlawful looking, from lying, backbiting, anger, ill-attitude, pride, and\nfrom all other sins. This is the same\nGreater Jihad that the holy Prophet (PBUH&HP) referred to when he told a\ngroup of his companions who had returned from war, having fought the enemy with\ntheir swords and weapons, \u201cPraise be to those who conducted the minor Jihad,\n(yet) on them remains the major Jihad.\u201d(2) \nNone but the faithful can conquer the greater Jihad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indeed! The struggle with one\u2019s\ndesires, despite its simplicity is difficult. \nIt is easy because man\u2019s natural instinct and wisdom realizes its\nbenefits and necessities, and if man steps into this field, the more he moves\nforward, the more successful he will be. \nOn the other hand, this act is difficult as the struggle with self,\nstanding against various desires and striving to control them, and recognizing\nSatanic traps and hidden desires is not easy. \nSuccessful is he who is able to control his\/her self-desires, and bring\nthem to a middle ground and make them follow the proper order. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The month of Ramadan is a great\nopportunity to step in this path and practice the struggle with self; and the\nEid al-Fitr is the day to preserve the results of this effort within the next\neleven months of the year. We need to be consistent in practicing the struggle\nwith our desires throughout all other times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
