The caravan was heading for Shaam\n(Damascus). The long journey from Karbala was over. When the seized properties from the martyrs\nof Karbala were shown to Yazid, there was a banner among them which surprised\nthe observers, as it was torn and damaged, but its staff was unscathed. Yazid asked,\n\u201cwho was the bearer of this banner?\u201d They answered, \u201cAbbas Ibn Ali.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yazid, in respect of Abbas (PBUH) the\nbearer of banner in Karbala, arose and sat for three times. Then he said to his\nfellows, \u201cLook at this banner which is torn and damaged entirely except its\nhandle where the holder has gripped until the last moment.\u201d Then he said, \u201cThis\nis the meaning of devotion to one\u2019s brother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anyone who has read the tragedy of\nKarbala or has heard about its disastrous events honors the personality of\nAbbas Ibn Ali (PBUH). He manifested bravery, honor, devotion, loyalty and\nsacrifice to the extent that even his enemies could not help praising his\nvirtues. History knows no match for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the 8th day of Dhi al-Hajjah, one\nday before the departure of the caravan of Imam Hussain (PBUH), Abbas Ibn Ali\n(PBUH) made a speech on the roof of Ka\u2019aba and said, \u201cAs long as my father Ali\nwas alive, no one dared to kill the Prophet, and as long as I am alive, no one\ndares to kill my brother Hussain.\u201d He told the crowd, \u201cLet me tell you the only\nway of killing Hussain is to kill me and cut off my head. That is the only way\nyou will fulfill your goal.\u201d By these words, he meant that it would be\nimpossible to kill the Imam as long as Abbas (PBUH) were alive. This family do\nnot fear death in the path of the beloved and have no hesitance in supporting\nand protecting the life of their Imam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These words show the highest devotion\nand sacrifice in the path of Imam of the Time (Imam Hussain (PBUH)). He was the\none who, not only in words, but also in action, showed his devotion to Imam\nHussain (PBUH) and proved his bravery with sacrifice. He aligned his actions to\nhis words. Abbas Ibn Ali (PBUH) made his chest the shield against the offenders\nof Imam Hussain (PBUH) on the day of Ashura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moreover, in the critical moments of\nwar he repeated, \u201cI defend the honor of the heir of the Prophet of Islam,\nMuhammad (PBUH&HP) and defeat you with my sharp sword to keep you away from\nmy master Hussain (PBUH). I am Abbas, lover of Hussain and his family; I am the\nson of Ali, who was approved by Allah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not only his words and actions were\naccordant, but also his performance was approved by the Imam of his time. When\nImam Hussain (PBUH), the infallible Imam, came to him at the moment of his\nmartyrdom, Imam Hussain (PBUH) told him: \u201cBrother, may God grant you sufficient\nreward; you toiled in the path of Allah and made Jihad the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
