Those familiar with the tragedy of\nKarbala have to an extent recognized the role, status, sacrifice, and courage\nof Abbas ibn Ali (PBUH), also referred to as Ab al-Fadl. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, is it possible to fully grasp\nand understand his status? Amidst the preparations of war, Abbas ibn Ali (PBUH)\nand his brothers were offered a letter from Ubaydullah, commander in chief of\nYazid\u2019s army, insuring their safety. Abbas ibn Ali (PBUH) firmly replied: \u201cWe are\nin no need of your protection. The safety Allah has provided us with is better\nthan that of the son of Sumayyah’s”. He then turned towards Shimr, who was\ncarrying the letter, and said: “May Allah curse you and the letter you\nhave brought. Are you offering us safety while the son of the Messenger of\nAllah is not safe?” With those words he sent them back into their own army. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or is it possible to recognize his\nmagnificence and status at the time when Imam Hussain (PBUH) bid farewell to\nthose who were willing to give up before the battle? \u201cI have given permission for all of you to\nleave. You are free (to go),\u201d said Imam Hussain (PBUH). \u201cLeave and you no\nlonger need to remain true to your allegiance with me.\u201d It was Ab al-Fadl al-Abbas (PBUH) who broke the\nsilence and said: “Why should we do such an act? To live after you,\nnever! May Allah (SWT) forbid such a day!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What degree of faith lies within him,\nwhich causes him to recite epic verses while his right hand has been cut off by\nthe army of Yazid? In a situation all else would fail to handle, Abbas (PBUH)\nsaid the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“By Allah\n(SWT), if you cut my right hand, I will never stand back, and I will protect my\nreligion; and I will support the Imam who stands firm in his belief, and is the\ngrandson of the pure and truthful Prophet.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ab al-Fadl al-Abbas (PBUH) is that\nsame person whom when Imam Hussain (PBUH) hurried to his martyred body, made a\nstatement that he had never before: a statement, which is another proof for the\nstatus of Abbas (PBUH). In losing his brother, Imam Hussain (PBUH) said:\n“(and) now my back has broken!” \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Sajjad (PBUH) has said about his\nuncle: “May Allah bless Abbas the son of Ali, who dedicated (his life),\nwas examined by calamity, and lost his life for his brother to the extent that\nhis two hands were cut off. \u2026Verily\nAbbas has a status in the presence of Allah that all the martyrs will envy on\nthe Day of Judgment\u2026”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the Ziyarat of Nahiya, Imam Mahdi\n(PBUH) addresses him as the following:”\u2026Peace be upon Ab al-Fadl al-Abbas,\nson of the commander of the believers, the one who protected his brother with\nhis own life, and collected provisions from his past for his future. It is he\nwho sacrificed himself for his brother, made his own life a shield, and made\nsufficient effort for his sake\u2026”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thus, we too would like to say:\n“Infinite peace and blessings be upon you and your righteous and\nenlightening behavior, O Ab al-Fadl! Peace be upon you as you reached your high\nstatus and courageously accomplished the path you faced. Peace be upon you as\nyou are among the greatest, most shining, and most sacrificial martyrs in the\npresence of Allah (SWT).” \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
