Human nature is driven towards beauty.\nHuman attraction to beauty is innate, and an appreciation of beauty is\nintertwined with his nature. Beauty can be divided into two types: the beauty\nin outer and the beauty in inner aspects\/moralities. Complete and comprehensive\nbeauty as considered by man is a combination of outer (appearance) and innate\n(soul) beauty. Although natural beauty and adornments beautify the appearance,\nknowledge and morality retain the utmost beauty in man, giving him spiritual\nbeauty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Historical sources portray Abbas ibn\nAli (PBUT) as an attractive man with obvious beauty. His face resembled a shine\nas that of the moon, and among the Bani Hashem \u2013 all of whom were famous for\ntheir beauty \u2013 he was referred as the \u201cMoon of Bani Hashem\u201d(1). He was tall,\nstrong. When he sat on horse, his feet would touch the earth(2). When he placed\nhis feet in the horse pedal his knee would align the horse ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But one should not suffice to his\nouter beauty, since his virtues built the rest of Abbas ibn Ali (PBUT) beauty.\nHe was beautiful both in spirit and in character. He was strong in piety,\nfaith, and commitment on the one hand, and considered among the heroes of\nIslam. Furthermore he owned great knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abbas ibn Ali (PBUT) was steadfast to\nhis faith in Allah (SWT). He had a bright intelligence and a strong belief.\nMonotheism and Allah\u2019s (SWT) love was deeply rooted in his heart. Sheikh Saduq\nhas narrated the marks of prostration on his forhead(3). He was familiar with\nmidnight worship and his face witnessed his worship and absolute humility\ntowards Allah (SWT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abbas ibn Ali (PBUT) was exceptional\nin both ritual worship and when it came to the battlefields. He had his\nfather\u2019s bravery. These two attributes rarely are found in one person. Abbas\n(PBUH) had combined courage and loyalty for truth, and devoted himself to the\npath of the infallible Imams (PBUT). His courage and loyalty was so well known\nthat the Shia Imams had continuously praised him as a man of high virtue and\nmorality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One day Imam Sajjad (PBUH) looked at\n\u201cUbaidallah\u201d the son of Abbas ibn Ali and cried\u2026 in remembrance of Abbas\n(PBUH), Imam said: \u201cMay Allah (SWT) bless my uncle Abbas who sacrificed himself\nfor the cause of his brother and devoted his life. He sacrificed such that his\nboth hands were cut off. In place of the two cut off hands Allah blessed him\nwith two wings in the heaven to fly with the angels, similar to Ja\u2019far ibn Abi\nTalib.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abbas ibn Ali\u2019s (PBUT) courage has\ngiven him a high status such that, Imam Sajjad (PBUH) elaborates further about\nhis uncle: \u201cAbbas has such high position with Allah that all martyrs will envy\nhim on the Day of Judgment.\u201d(4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was not only a courageous and pious\nman, but also his depth of knowledge benefited from the fountain of knowledge\n(of his father) from childhood. The statement: \u201cHe has fully tasted the\nknowledge\u201d(5) has been used on some narrations which points to knowledge he\nreceived in early age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His Jurisprudence level was very high\nand he was among the most trusted narrators of his time. Some of the scholars\nhave the following statement about him: \u201cAbbas (PBUH) was among the learned\nscholar of the Imams’ children who was just, trusted and pious\u201d(6) or \u201cAbbas\n(PBUH) was among the intellectuals and scholars of Ahl al-Bait (PBUT)\u201d(7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What was mentioned was only a little\nof the moral virtues of Abbas (PBUH). In brief he had the beauty in face and\ncharacter together. These valuable characteristics has made Abbas ibn Ali\n(PBUT) outstanding and eternal in the history of Islam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imam Sajjad\n(PBUH) first recalls the battle of Uhud and incident of Karbala; he said the\nfollowing about Hamza Sayyed al-Shohada and his uncle Abbas Ibn Ali (PBUH):\n\u201cThere was not day harder than the battle of Uhud. In that day his uncle Hamzah\nwho was a courageous man fighting for cause of Allah and the Prophet was\nmartyred. Also, there was no day harder than the day of Ashura for Hossain Ibn\nAli (PBUT) (when battle of Karbala took place), where he was surrounded by\nthirty thousand enemy soldiers; their thought was to get closer to Allah (SWT)\nby killing the grandson of the Prophet. At the very end they killed him after\nignoring all the advice received from Hossuin ibn Ali (PBUT)\u201d. Imam Sajjad\n(PBUH) then continued to elaborate on his uncle\u2019s sacrifice on the day of\nAshura. (Amali Sheikh Saduq, p. 432).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5. The great\nscholar, Abd al-Razzaq writes in his book Al-Abbas (p. 163) that the infallible\nImam said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Abbas ibn\nAli (PBUT) has comprehended the knowledge completely.” The word used in\nthis narration means that Abbas (PBUH) had the ability to receive knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
