The social-political life of the Imams\n(PBUT) is exemplary in the way of feeling responsibility for protecting\nreligion and increasing knowledge. Their stability in the fundamentals of\nreligion in addition to their attention to the current situation of society has\nallowed researchers and historians to distinguish the similarities and differences\nin the lives of the Imams (PBUT). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the martyrdom of Imam Reza\n(PBUH), the Abbasid Dynasty became more publicly intolerable toward the\nInfallible Imams (PBUT). Ma\u2019mun (1)\nsummoned Imam Jawad (PBUH) to Baghdad (2) and forced the Imam to marry Ma\u2019mun\u2019s\ndaughter (which was against the Imam\u2019s will). Through this marriage, Ma\u2019mun had\nsettled for an even deeper spying system in the house of Imam Jawad\n(PBUH). Not only did he intend to gain\nmore control over the Imam, but he had also intended to further reform his bad\nreputation as the killer of Imam Reza (PBUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the time of Imam Hadi (PBUH), the\nsituation became even worse. The ambitious rulers, who were no longer from the\nArab race, were divided into different internal groups based on their tribe and\nrace. The very first result of this division was the decline in the\nmagnificence status of the caliphate. The dispute amongst the slaves, the\nTurks, and the Arabs within the Abbasid Dynasty had become clearly apparent.\nThe fact that the short period of Imamate of Imam Hadi (PBUH) was contemporary\nto the government of six different Abbasid Caliphs reveals best the instability\nof the dynasty. Moreover, the governors became more sensual and luxuriated in\nthis period; thus, oppression and obstinacy became widespread, resulting in the\nimmense dissatisfaction of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amongst those six rulers, Mutawakkil\u2019s\nintelligence, policies, harsh judgmental verdicts, sensuality, immoralities,\nand hatred towards Amir al-Mu\u2019minin (PBUH) surpassed not only the other five\ncontemporary caliphs, but also all other rulers who ruled during the Abbasid\nand Umayyad Dynasty; and as a result put his reign into a very critical\nposition. The most important examples showing his hatred towards the Ahl\nal-Bayt (PBUT) are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through having a group perform\nsarcastic plays about Amir al-Mu\u2019minin in his palace, he intended to sabotage\nImam Ali\u2019s (PBUH) character and transfer his hatred of Amir al-Mu\u2019minin to the\npeople. This act was even objected by Mutawakkil\u2019s son, Muntasir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He ordered for the destruction of the\nshrine of Imam Hussain (PBUH) and converting it into a farm. He also ordered to\npunish the pilgrims, and prepare inspection stops in order to prevent people\nfrom visiting the shrine of Imam Hussain (PBUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He ordered for economic besiege of the\nAlawis (3) and the lovers of Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) in order to destroy them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In order to stray people from the\naffair of Imamat and have control over his opposition, Mutiwakkil tried to\nintroduce Musa, brother of Imam Hadi (PBUH), who was a weak person as the\nleader of the Shiites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He summoned Imam Hadi (PBUH) and\nforced him to reside in Samarra, a city used solely for military purposes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nevertheless, using his intelligence\nand divine sharpness, Imam Hadi (PBUH) not only survived the treacheries, but\nalso through residing in Samarra, was able to nullify the false propaganda made\nagainst him by the associates of the Caliph. Preventing the Caliph any\nopportunity to object, Imam Hadi (PBUH) was also able to organize, stabilize,\nand strengthen the representation system, which was first established by Imam\nJawad (PBUH). Moreover, through his written teachings, he prepared the Shiites\nfor the upcoming occultation of Imam Mahdi (PBUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Besides that, Imam Hadi (PBUH)\nprotected the different fields of Islamic thought, namely Fiqh (jurisprudence)\nand Aqa\u2019id (beliefs), by attending the technical discussions usually held in\nthe Abbasid court. With his answers, he prevented the spread of deviation\namongst the Muslims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the most brilliant activities\nof Imam Hadi (PBUH) was his severe and tense struggle against the Ghulat (4)\n(exaggerators). This struggle was so important that it could be compared to\nImam Ali\u2019s (PBUH) fight against the Khawarij. The struggle finally ended in the\ndefeat of the nuisance, proven that it can only be done by an Infallible Imam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
