After the martyrdom of Imam Reza\n(PBUH), Ma\u2019mun tried very hard to prevent the society from discovering that he\nhad poisoned the Imam. He pretended to mourn the death of the Imam. The Shiite\ncommunity however, had realized that it was indeed Ma\u2019mun who had martyred the\neighth Imam. They were very hurt and upset for this realization. Hence, Ma\u2019mun\nknew his reign was in danger, and began to devise yet another plot against the\nShiites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ma\u2019mun pretended to love and care for\nImam Jawad (PBUH), the son of Imam Reza (PBUH). He planned for a forced\nmarriage between his daughter and Imam Jawad (PBUH), in an effort to legalize\nhis government. He had done the same with the forceful deputyship of Imam Reza\n(PBUH) during his lifetime. Ma\u2019mun relocated Imam Jawad (PBUH) from Medina to\nBaghdad in the year 204 AH (one year after the martyrdom of Imam Reza (PBUH)),\nand planned for the marriage of the Imam with his daughter Umm al-Fadhl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This marriage, which Ma\u2019mun insisted\non, had a completely political motivation. Ma\u2019mmoon desired to obtain the\nfollowing results through this marriage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1- Sending his\ndaughter to Imam Jawad\u2019s (PBUH) house gave him the ability to closely monitor\nthe Imam\u2019s activities. Many historical sources have recorded incidents in which\nMa\u2019mun\u2019s daughter spied on the Imam to her father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. With this\nmarriage Ma\u2019mun wanted to associate Imam Jawad (PBUH) with his palace which was\nfull of unlawful activities, hoping to somehow involve the Imam with the\ncorruption. He was aiming to distort the sacred image and infallible character\nof the Imam in the eyes of the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3- Ma\u2019mun\nclearly aimed to fool the public; as he had seldom said: \u201cI opted for this\nmarriage so that my daughter could bear Imam Jawad\u2019s child, and I would become\nthe grandfather of a child who is related to the Prophet and Ali ibn Abitalib\n(PBUT).\u201d(1) Thankfully, Ma\u2019mun\u2019s deception was without any result as Umm Fadhl\nnever bore any child and all Imam Jawad\u2019s (PBUT) children were from his other\nspouse. (2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4- Ma\u2019mun wanted\nto prevent the Shiite community from uprising and show his love to the Ali’s\n(PBUH) progeny by means of this marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since Imam Jawad (PBUH) \u2013without any\ndoubt\u2013 knew Ma\u2019mun’s ill-intentions, and his role in the martyrdom of Imam Reza\n(PBUH), it is not too far off to say Imam Jawad\u2019s (PBUH) main reason of\naccepting the marriage to Ma\u2019mun\u2019s daughter was an acceptance under pressure,\nsince such marriage was only to Ma\u2019mun benefit and had none for Imam Jawad\n(PBUT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The life of Imam Jawad (PBUH) confirms\nthe force imposed and extreme reluctance in his marriage with Ma\u2019mun\u2019s\ndaughter, his life in Ma\u2019mun\u2019s palace, and his move to Baghdad. For instance,\nHussain Makari who was one of Imam Jawad\u2019s (PBUH) companions narrated: \u201cI went\nto see Imam Jawad (PBUH) in Baghdad; I saw his life and passed these lines in\nmy head: \u2018Now that the Imam has reached a comfortable life, there is no way he\nwill return to his homeland, Medina.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Jawad (PBUH) sunk his head for a\nmoment. He then looked up with great disappointment and said: \u201cOh Hussain, the\nbarley bread and rough salt near the Prophet\u2019s shrine is much more pleasant for\nme than my current situation.\u201d(3)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Accordingly the Imam however, didn\u2019t\nstay in Baghdad and moved to Medina with his wife, Umm Fadhl, and continued to\nlive there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thus, Imam Jawad (PBUH) was forced to\nlive with the daughter of his father\u2019s murderer. Ma\u2019mun died in the year 218 AH\nand his brother Mu\u2019tasim replaced him. Mu\u2019tasim ordered the Imam to move back\nto Baghdad. Hence Imam Jawad (PBUH) entered Baghdad during Muharram of year 220\nAH. Then Mu\u2019tasim along with Umm Fadhl and Ja\u2019far (Ma\u2019mun\u2019s son) plotted the\nscheme to kill the Imam. Umm Fadh finally poisoned her own husband, Imam Jawad\n(PBUH) based on the by her uncle and brother\u2019s insistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is how Imam Jawad (PBUH) was\nmartyred at the end of Dhi al-Qa\u2019da in year 220; he was buried in Baghdad\nbesides his grandfather, Imam Kadhim (PBUH). Therefore, the marriage which was\nforced on Imam Jawad (PBUH) to mislead the public and monitor the Imam at the\nsame time had succeeded in its plot to removing the Imam from the path of the\ncaliphs. The role of Umm Fadhl in martyrdom of the Imam is a proof for the\ndeceptiveness of this marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
