Ma\u2019mun (the Abbasid caliph) did\neverything to drag Imam Jawad (PBUH) to the grounds of corruption and to\ntarnish his image in the eyes of people; but he failed every time. One of his\ntricks was the marriage between his daughter Umm Fadhl and Imam Jawad (PBUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One may ask, why did Imam Jawad (PBUH)\nagree to marry his daughter? To find the answer, we should look into the\nreligious movement which Prophet\u2019s progeny (PBUT) lead and the state of this\nmovement at the time of Imam Reza (PBUH) and his son, Imam Jawad (PBUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During Ma\u2019mun\u2019s rule, the religious\nmovement managed to infiltrate the government and was able to grow well while\nthe Imams (PBUT) did not surrender their principles. In other words, they never\naccepted to rule, and thus they did not cooperate with the government. For\nexample, Imam Reza (PBUH) accepted to be Ma\u2019mun\u2019s successor with the condition\nthat he (the Imam) would not be involved in the government\u2019s affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Imam Jawad married Umm Fadhl, he\nbecame the son in-law of the caliph and he utilized this opportunity for his\nmission. One question that may arise is what it really meant to be the caliph\u2019s\nson in-law? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whoever was given a position at the\npalace of caliphs, would find himself as a ruler of some city\/area or at least\nas a judge in the society. But Imam Jawad (PBUH) did not seek any of these\npositions. In fact, he pursed two objectives through this marriage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, becoming son in-law of the\ncaliph made it more difficult for Ma\u2019mun to murder him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Second, Imam Jawad (PBUH) was able to\nprotect key members of the Shia movement through his influence in the caliph\u2019s\npalace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nonetheless, he would not hide his\ndissatisfaction with the status quo. Imam Jawad (PBUH) was not happy to live in\nthe Abbasid palace while being far away from the difficulties of his followers\nand the Islamic society. If he had the possibility to depart from the city of\nBaghdad, he would not have stayed there for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of Imam\u2019s companions narrates: I\nwent to Baghdad to visit Imam Jawad (PBUH) and thought about his luxurious life\nstyle; I told myself: With such comfortable life, this man would never go back\nto his hometown! Meanwhile, Imam\u2019s face turned pale; he turned to me and said,\n\u201cEating an old bread and hard salt in the Prophet\u2019s shrine (city of Medina, the\nbirthplace of Imam Jawad) is much more pleasant for me than the comfort I have\nright now.\u201d(1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Jawad (PBUH) showed clearly his\nlack of interest in his life in the Ma\u2019mun palace, but due to his higher goal\nof protecting the religion of Allah and propagating authentic Islamic\nknowledge, he decided to stay in Baghdad. Therefore, he was forced to stay in\nMa\u2019mun\u2019s palace and to work toward more important goals while accepting the\nenvironmental conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
