Some year, Mahdi Abbasi (one of the\nAbbasid Caliphs) entered Medina and after visiting the Prophet\u2019s (PBUH&HP)\nshrine conducted a meeting with Imam Kadhim (PBUH). To examine Imam Kadhim\n(PBUH) scientifically, he posed the debate about the taboo against wine in the\nholy Quran and asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– \u201cIs\nwine forbidden in the holy Quran?\u201d He\nthen continued, \u201cMost people know about the negative view the Quran holds about\ndrinking wine, but they do not know whether this view calls for the fact that\ndrinking wine is truly prohibited or not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Imam\nKadhim (PBUH) said, \u201cYes, the taboo against wine has been declared explicitly\nin the holy Quran.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Mahdi\nasked, \u201cWhere in Quran exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Imam answered, \u201cWhere\nAllah (SWT) addressed His Prophet, \u201cSay: My Lord has only prohibited\nindecencies, those of them that are apparent as well as those that are\nconcealed, and sin (\u2018Ithm) and rebellion without justice\u2026\u201d1<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After explaining some other subjects\nthat are prohibited in this verse, Imam Kadhim (PBUH) said, \u201cThe meaning of the\nword \u201cIthm\u201d in this verse, which is prohibited by Allah, is wine. For, Allah\nhas said in another verse that, \u201cThey ask you concerning wine and gambling.\nSay: “In them is great sin (Ithm), and some profit, for men; but the sin\nis greater than the profit.”.\u201d2<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Imam (PBUH) concluded, \u201cAnd Ithm,\nwhich is prohibited explicitly in Surah A\u2019raf (Seventh chapter of the holy\nQuran), is used for wine and gambling in Surah Baqarah (Second chapter); thus,\nwine is explicitly prohibited in the holy Quran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mahdi, who was affected by the\nreasoning of Imam Kadhim (PBUH), turned to one of the attendants present and\nsaid: \u201cBy Allah, this Fatwa (Islamic ruling), is a Hashimi Fatwa!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man replied, \u201cI praise Allah who\nhas given this knowledge to you, the household of Prophet Muhammad.\u201d3<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mahdi got angry. And though trying\nvery hard to hide his anger, he said: \u201cYou are right, O Rafidi!\u201d4<\/p>\n\n\n\n
