Practicing patience, particularly\npatience and endurance in the loss of a child or close relative is highly\nrewarded in the hereafter. Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Quran:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026Only the\npatient will be paid back their reward in full without measure.\u201d1<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Holy Quran and the\nnarrations from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) and his progeny, all good\ndeeds are set with a specific reward. However, according to this verse, no one\nbut Allah is aware of the amount of reward for the truly patient. As protectors\nof religion, the Imams practiced the highest level of patience. They not only\nremained patient in the event of tragic\nevents, but even praised the Lord and were satisfied of the Lord\u2019s decree upon\nthem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Ja\u2019far Sadiq (PBUH) had a son\nnamed Isma\u2019el. He was the eldest child. When Isma\u2019el reached his youth, he was\nalready a wise young man with many virtues; people thought that he is the son\nwho will continue his father\u2019s legacy, and become the next divine leader of the\npeople. While at the peak of his ingenuity, he fell ill and died suddenly. Imam\nSadiq (PBUH) did not leave his house and asked his companions to perform the\nburial ceremony. The Imam served a\ndecent meal for the group who performed the burial. The companions were\nsurprised of the Imam\u2019s calmness and ultimately asked about his grief over the\nloss of his young son. Imam Sadiq (PBUH) responded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou have heard\nthe verse about the great Prophet (PBUH&HP), which says: \u201cSurely you shall\ndie and they (too) shall surely die\u201d2. \nAccording to this verse, death is an inevitable divine fate even for the\npure and pious ones.\u201d The Imam helped his companions understand that despite\nthe horrifying incident for the loss of his son, he is fully satisfied with\nwhat Allah (SWT) has decreed for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Sadiq (PBUH) had another son who\nwas very playful. He would often run or\nwalk ahead of his father in the city of\nMedina. One day, some food got stuck in his throat causing him to choke and die\nin the presence of the Imam. Imam Sadiq (PBUH) cried for the loss of his son,\nalthough he refrained from moaning or complaining of his death. He turned to\nthe body of his son and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf you were\ntaken, then I got [an opportunity] to stay, and if you got inflicted, then I\nwas saved\u201d. Then he turned to the women crying and moaning loundly, calmed them\ndown and asked them to stop the screaming for the sake of Allah. He then took\nhis son for the burial and said: \u201cPraise be onto the One who takes our children\naway. Our love for Him only increases.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the burial, Imam Sadiq (PBUH)\nsaid: \u201cWe are the nation whom Allah gives us that which we request of Him for\nsomeone. And if Allah desires something for someone we love, we too are\nsatisfied, even if it is unpleasant for us\u201d. In other words, we ask Allah to\ngive us what we love for our family and friends. And we will remain patient and\nsatisfied at whatever hardship befalls our family and friends, knowing it is\nAllah\u2019s decree upon them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
