The size of the family of Imam Sadiq\n(PBUH) and his living expenses had increased. Therefore, the Imam (PBUH)\ndecided to start a trading business in order to increase his income to balance\nthe expenditure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He gathered one thousand gold coins as\ncapital and said to one of his servants named Musadif, “Take these one\nthousand gold coins and be prepared to travel to Egypt for trading”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Musadif spent that money to buy what\nwas usually carried to Egypt, and then he joined a caravan of traders who had\nbought the same property as he had. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When they approached Egypt, they came\nacross another group of traders who had just left Egypt. They asked about their\nbusiness, and within their conversations, Musadif and his friends realized that\nthe property they were carrying had become rare. Therefore, they were excited\nover their luck. The property they were carrying was extremely essential to the\npeople. The people had to buy it for whatever price it was available at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The traders became so happy about this\nnews, and they made a promise among themselves not to sell their properties\nexcept with a profit margin of more than 100%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They entered Egypt and found the\nsituation exactly the same as they were informed. Based on their promise, they\ndid not sell their properties for less than twice as much as what they had\nbought them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Musadif returned to Medina with one\nthousand gold coins of net profit. Excited and happy, he went to Imam Sadiq\n(PBUH) and offered him two pouches of money, each of which contained one\nthousand gold coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Sadiq (PBUH) asked him,\n“What are these?” Musadif replied, “One of the pouches is what\nyou gave ma as capital, and the other, which is equal to the capital, is the\nnet profit I gained”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Sadiq (PBUH) said, “That is\na lot of profit. Tell me how you made so much profit?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Musadif replied, “We were\ninformed just before reaching Egypt that the property we were carrying had\nbecome rare. So we made a promise not to sell our properties unless with a\nminimum of 100% profit margin”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Sadiq (PBUH) said,\n“Sanctified is Allah! What have you done? You made a promise to manipulate\nthe market? You promised not to sell your properties for less than twice its\noriginal price? No! I do not want such a profit.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, Imam Sadiq (PBUH) took one of\nthe pouches and said,” This is my money”, and he did not touch the\nother one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, he said,” O Musadif! Moving\na sword (fighting and putting your life in danger) is easier than gaining\nlegitimate income”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
