The price of wheat and bread was\nrising day by day in Media. Citizens were therefore overtaken by bewilderment\nand anxiety. Anyone who had not stored wheat for the year use would try hard to\nprovide and stock it, and those who had enough were conserving their supply.\nThere were also the poor who needed to purchase their wheat from bazaar on day\nto day basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (PBUH) called the\nman in-charge of his house, named Muattab and asked him: \u201cHow much wheat do we\nhave at present?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Muattab replied: \u201cSir, we have enough\nto last us for several months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTake it to the bazaar\nand offer all for sale to the people\u201d, instructed the Imam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh! Son of the\nProphet! Wheat is very scarce in Medina. If we sell our stock, perhaps it would\nbe impossible to purchase later.\u201d advised the care-taker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
”Do as I have\nsaid (Sell all our stock to the people).\u201d replied Imam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Muattab, did as he was told and sold\nall the wheat. He reported the result to his master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next, the Imam ordered him: \u201cHenceforth,\nbuy the requirement of his house on day to day basis. The bread of my household\nmust not be different from that of the masses. The bread from now must be half\nwheat and half barley. By the grace of Almighty I have the strength to easily\nprovide my house with bread made from pure wheat. However, I am not doing so,\nbecause I want to keep my life in a moderate status before Allah for\ncompassionating, assisting people, and seeking equality with them in my\nhousehold\u2019s expenses.(1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
