Looking into history, we see that the\nspiritual status of our Imams (PBUH) and their great dedication in worshiping\nAllah has been so sincere that surprised everyone, even their own enemies. For\ninstance, some spiritual characteristics of the forth Imam of Shia, Imam Ali\nibn al-Hussain (PBUH) has been described as follows: when making Wudu he paled\nand during Salat his holy body shacked (Out of humbleness in front of Allah).\nImam Baqir (PBUH) narrates about his father`s modesty when performing Salat:\n\u201cWhen praying, Ali ibn al-Hussain was like a still tree stem, unless moved a\nlittle by wind.\u201d (1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What is the secret of this much\nhumbleness? There is no doubt in the great dignity of those honorable saints\nwho were the best people of the Islamic community. However, why would they\nbother themselves with tough rituals? Imam Sajjad (PBUH), himself has explained\nthe reason in the following narration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAbd al-Malek Marwan, the\ngovernor at the time, imprisoned a group of Muslims. Once informed about the\nnews, Imam Zain al-Abedin (PBUH) went to ask him to free the prisoners.\nNoticing the signs of Sajdah (prostration) on Imam`s forehead surprised Abd\nal-Malek and made him to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cO` the son of the\nprophet, it is obvious that you make lots of efforts to worship Allah; while\nyou have a high positon before Him. You are a part of the body of the holy\nprophet and a close relative of him. You have a strong connection to him, you\nare the best of your progeny, and you have the highest degree amongst other\npeople \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once Abd al-Malek finished describing\nImam`s great qualities, Imam (PBUH) said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou are right about what\nyou mentioned about the blessings of Allah, the glorious. However, it is good\nto be grateful and appreciated for all of his blessings and endowments. The holy\nprophet (PBUH&HP) used to pray a lot in a way that his holy legs would\nswell. While fasting, he used to get too thirsty that his holy mouth would\ncompletely become dry. People told him: \u201cO` the prophet of Allah, you are\nfabulous and have a great status before Allah. {So why do you trouble yourself\nwith this amount of devoutness?}\u201d The holy prophet (PBUH&HP) said: \u201cShall I\nnot be a thankful servant of Allah?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thanks to Allah for his tests and\ntrials. He is appreciated in this world and the other. I swear to Allah that if\nmy body got in pieces {by the difficulty of worships} and my tears run to my\nchest, I would not be able to thank Allah even for a very small amount of one\nof his blessings as they deserve. He has blessed us with many things that if\nall people gather, won`t be able to count and no one is capable to describe\neven one of them. If all the people gather to appreciate his blessings, they\ncannot thank even one of them. I swear to Allah, they will not be able! \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While talking, Imam (PBUH) was crying\nhard. His sacred speech and holy face of Imam impressed and surprised the\ntyrant ruler and made him say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2019There is a significant\ndistance between the servant who demands the hereafter and tried for it, and\nthe person who desires this world and does not benefit from the hereafter.\u2019 Abd\nal-Malek showed respect to Imam, accepted his intercession about the prisoners\nand ordered their freedom.\u201d (2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
