The view common people have towards\none who isolates himself from society and devotes his life solely to performing\nhis religious rituals, such as praying, ablution (Wudu), supplicating, Hajj,\netc, is a stranger to the society. Such a person cares nothing about his\nmaterialistic and social life, and spends his life in worship. The life of Imam\nAli ibn al Hussain, Sajjad (PBUH) however, contradicts this view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite his long unique prayers and\nsupplications, Imam Sajjad (PBUH) was never ignorant of his society, its needs,\nand the realities of the time. In fact, in regards to interactions with\nsociety, he was a role model in the social and moral duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Muhammad Is\u2019haq narrates: Many of the\npoor citizens of Medina had experienced the generosity and kindness of Imam Ali\nibn al-Hussain. Yet, they never found out it was the Imam as he would visit\nthem during the nights, until Ali ibn al-Hussain (PBUH) passed away, and that\nanonymous man never came to them any more. It was then that they found out that\nthat anonymous helper was Imam Zein al-‘Abedin (PBUH).1<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abu Hamzah al-Thomali also narrates:\nDuring the night, Imam Zein al-‘Abedin (PBUH) would carry food on his shoulders\nfor the poor and needy people. He would\nsay, “Giving charity in secret, will subside the anger of Allah.” 2 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ibn Sa’ad who died around 200 A.H. has\nnarrated: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were many poor people who would\ncome to the Imam for help, and before they even asked for anything, the Imam\nwould give them what they wanted. Imam Sajjad (PBUH) would then say, \u201cGiving\ncharity is received by Allah before it is received by the poor.”3<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was from the examples mentioned\nabove that when the Imam was martyred, and some were helping in washing his\nbody (giving him Ghusl), they noticed the wounds on his shoulder and back. They\nasked about it, and found out that the wounds were the result of carrying the\nfood for the poor.4<\/p>\n\n\n\n
