It was the last days of the life of\nMu\u2019awiyah. With his vicious plots, he chose his corrupt son Yazid as his heir\n(1), and a dark future was the prospect of the Islamic society. After this\nincident, Imam Hussain (PBUH) first reproached Mu\u2019awiyah with serious and\naggressive letters. Furthermore he decided to awaken the sleeping society by\ngiving a speech in a public place. Therefore at the Hajj ceremony in Mina (2)\nhe organized a great gathering (about a thousand people) and invited the heads\nof the Islamic Ummah. He addressed the people in some parts of his speech as\nsuch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cO people, learn\nlesson from the advices God gives regarding the scholars of the previous\ncommunities. Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Quran, \u2018Why do not the religious\nscholars prohibit people from speaking vice words and eating the forbidden\nthings?\u201d(3)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reason why God reproaches them is\nthat they witnessed corruption and unacceptable behavior from the tyrants of\ntheir time, but did not prohibit them. I fear that a Divine punishment falls\nupon you; while you witness that the oaths of God is being broken (and you do\nnothing)\u2026 It is surprising that the nation is conquered by a traitor tyrant and\nthe faithful people are being dominated by a cruel ruler \u2026 The reason why they\nhave dominated you is that you escape death, and you have been satisfied and\ncheered with this temporary life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he announced his motive for his\nmovement and rising, \u201cO Allah, you are aware \u2026 that all my effort is to show\nthe people the true path of Your religion, and to bring reformation in the\ncities, so that Your oppressed servants are secured from the tyrants, and that\nthe religious duties and rules are performed among Your people.\u201d(4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mu\u2019awiyah died and his son sat at his\nplace of Caliphate. Shortly after, by the mediation of Medina\u2019s ruler, he asked\nfor the hand of allegiance from Imam Hussain (PBUH). Imam replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf the fate of the\nIsalmic community is at the hands of a ruler like Yazid, Islam should be\nconsidered ceased.\u201d(5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That means paying allegiance to Yazid\nis equal to being satisfied with the death of Islam. These words show that the\nmotive of Imam Hussain (PBUH) for his rising was persevering the basis of\nIslam, and preventing its demise. The use of the word \u201clike Yazid\u201d shows that\nhe was not intending Yazid particularly, rather his opposition was the attitude\nof Yazid that if it shows up at any time or by anyone who opposes the religion\nof God, he would be his enemy and he will oppose him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yazid died and deteriorated in the\ndepths of the soil; however, Yazid\u2019s attitude will be present in the world\nuntil the appearance of Imam Mahdi (PBUH). This attitude should be opposed by\nthe followers of Hussain (PBUH), and the annual mourning for Ashura is for\nkeeping alive this attitude of Imam Hussain (PBUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Such a great cause is intended, that\nImam Hussain (PBUH) goes to the most horrible calamities with his most dear\nrelatives for the satisfaction of God. He did not hesitate for a moment; on the\ncontrary, he stood steadily and firmly as if no distress had hurt him \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was the moments that he was alone.\nHe had to confront the army of the enemy and also guard the family tents so\nthat the kids and ladies in the tents are not hurt. He used to attack the army\nand disperse them, and then return. He stopped at the point from which the\ntents were visible, and looked at the tents and shout loudly: \u201cthere is neither\nchange nor power except from Allah\u201d, so that the people at the tents can hear\nhim and know he was still alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He finally got tired. He was not\ncapable of repetitive attacks and returns anymore; so he came to the tents for\nthe final farewell. He came near the bed of his sick son, Zain al-\u2018Abidin\n(PBUH). He had fainted; so he put his hand at the forehead of his son. The son\nopened his eyes and saw blood dropping from the chains of his father\u2019s shield.\nHe tried to stand up, but he couldn\u2019t. Asking and replying was not possible. He\nsaid a few words as his will, and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGet ready for bearing\ncalamities, and be aware that God is your protector and guard. Never complain\nand don\u2019t say any word that lowers your position and rank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He bent down and kissed his son\u2019s\nforehead. He stood up and got on his horse, and turned toward the people in the\ntents for the last time and said farewell to them and told, \u201cI am going\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He went and did not come back until\nthe roars of his rider-less horse reached to his sisters and daughters. They\nran out of the tents, and faced the site of martyrdom… \u201cO Mohammad, O Ali, O\nHussain!\u201d(6)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
