“O People!\nThe Messenger of Allah has said: If anyone witnesses an oppressive ruler – who\npermits that which has been forbidden by Allah, breaks the divine covenant,\nopposes the Prophet’s Sunnah and regulations, and treats Allah’s servants\nthrough sinful acts and oppression – but does not express his opposition by\nactions or words towards that ruler, then Allah would have the right to place\nhim in the status of the oppressive ruler (the hellfire).” (1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pure worship, freedom, justice, piety,\nbravery, and all other humane characteristics manifested in Imam Ali (PBUH) and\nhis progeny were a result of true monotheism, absolute obedience and sincere\nattention to Allah (SWT). In deciding\nbetween options, the Holy Imams (PBUT) always chose the option most preferred\nby Allah (SWT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The best example of their pure\nintentions and obedience toward Allah (SWT) can be seen in the rise of Imam\nHussain (PBUH) against Yazid from the Umayyad Dynasty: a religious movement and\na rise against tyranny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Imam Hussain (PBUH) migrated from\nMedina to Mecca and from thereon decided to move to Iraq, some of the Islamic\nscholars became concerned. They remembered the prophecies made by the Messenger\nof Allah about his grandson, and thus knew that Imam Hussain (PBUH) was moving\ntowards his martyrdom. Observing the situation of the society and the fear\nwithin people from the Umayyad dynasty, the scholars had no hope in this\nmission of Imam Hussain (PBUH). They remembered how the people of Kufa had\nbetrayed Amir al-Mu’minin and his son, Imam Hassan ibn Ali (PBUT) hence, the\nfuture was clear. In their certainty that Imam Hussain (PBUH) would be martyred\ngreat people like Ibn Abbas have said: “We didn’t doubt that Hussain (PBUH)\nwas going to be killed in Karbala.”(2) In another statement Farazdaq sent\na warning message to Imam Hussain (PBUH): “Their hearts are with you but\ntheir swords are against you.”(3) The above clearly indicates that\nalthough people knew the right was with Imam Hussain (PBUH), their fear from\nthe Umayyad Dynasty and weak hearts prevented them from standing up for truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rise of Imam Hussein (PBUH) was\ncompletely apart from personal, political, or tribal matters, for the Imam knew\nthat the end of this journey is martyrdom. Imam Hussain (PBUH) was indeed a\nservant of Allah (SWT). He is the one who told his brother, Muhammad Ibn\nHanafiyeh, in a well-known letter: “I am not leaving the city to revolt or\nto oppress anyone, nor to run injustice against what is right. I am rising to\nimprove the community of my grandfather Muhammad (PBUH&HP); I want to\ninvite people to good and forbid them from evil. I want to follow the path of\nmy grandfather Messenger of Allah and my father Ali Ibn Abitalib (PBUH)”\n(4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hence, Hussain (PBUH) was not seeking\npolitical power, wealth, or the like. He was obeying Allah (SWT) by rejecting\nto pay allegiance to Yazid. He was submissive to Allah’s (SWT) will to leave\nMedina and Mecca; and he was obedient to rise. Therefore, Hussain’s (PBUH) intention\nwas only to please Allah (SWT) and to accomplish his duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
