\u201cHussein is from me and I am from Hussein\u2026Allah loves him who loves\nHussein; Hussein is a grandson among the progeny of the prophets.\u201d1<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The stated tradition by Prophet\nMuhammad (PBUH&HP) is among popular traditions narrated by both Sunni and\nShiite references pertaining his grandson Hussein Ibn Ali (PBUH). Tirmizi, Ibn\nMajeh2 and Ahmad Ibn Hanbal are among the top Sunni narrators to have recorded\nit; and among the Shiite references include Kaamel al-Ziaraat, Irshad Sheikh\nMofid and \u2018Alaam al-waraa Sheikh Toosi . \nThe story behind the narration is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One day Prophet Mohammad (PBUH&HP)\nwas heading to a ceremony, when along the way he saw Imam Hussein (PBUH)\nplaying with a few other children. The prophet happily followed Imam Hussein\n(PBUH) until he caught him in his arms. The Prophet placed one hand under\nHussein\u2019s chin and the other behind his head, lifted his face and kissed him,\nsaying \u201cHussein is from me and I am from Hussein; who so ever loves, Allah\n(SWT) shall be his friend; Hussein is a grandson amongst the grandchildren\n(Asbat) of the Prophets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grandchildren, (Asbat) here refers to\nthe grandchildren of Jacob (Ya\u2019qub) (PBUH), as a Prophet. The narration is\ncomparing Hussein to Jacob\u2019s progeny. He\nis shown to be Prophet Muhammad\u2019s grandson in the areas of faith, infallibility\nand understanding of revelations, and at the same level of the prophets and chosen\nmessengers of Allah (SWT). Following the analogy a Jewish scholar conducted a\ndebate with Amir al-Mu\u2019menin (PBUH). Amidst the debate, the scholar said:\n\u201cHere, Jacob was blessed with many children, even Maryam (Marry) the daughter\nof Imran was one of his daughters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amir al-Mu\u2019menin (PBUH) replied: \u201cIt\nis true, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH&HP) was blessed with even more, as Fatimah\n(PBUH) the Lady of all women in both worlds is among his daughters, and Hassan\nand Hussein, are the children of his daughter.\u201d4<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also recorded, the Prophet\n(PBUH&HP) has said, \u201cAllah (SWT) sent forty thousand messengers, who had\nfour thousand successors and eight thousand grandchildren. By He who holds my\nlife in His hands, I am the best of those messengers, my successors are the best\nof all successors, and my two grandchildren are the best of grandchildren among\nall messengers. Hassan and Hussein are the two grandchildren of my people.\nJacob had twelve grandchildren, and the Imams (Leaders) after me are twelve\nfrom my progeny. The first of them is Ali, in the middle is Mohammad and the\nlast Imam is Mohammad. He is the Mahdi of my people, and he is the one who\nJesus the Son of Marry will pray behind him; who so ever grasps their rope has\ncertainly grasped the rope of Allah (SWT), and whoever leaves them has\ncertainly departed Allah (SWT)5. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the narration, \u201cHussein is from me\nand I am from Hussein\u201d Prophet Mohammad (PBUH&HP) presents his spiritual\nconnection and depth of affection towards Hussein Ibn Ali (PBUH). Amongst the\nSunni scholars, Qadhi \u2018Ayadh6 has said in regards to this narration: \u201cIt seems\nthat the Prophet (PBUH&HP) through divine revelations knew of the events\nthat were to take place between Hussein and those who killed him. So, he\nparticularly brought Hussein\u2019s name up and clearly articulated that him and\nHussein were one in the areas of being loved, respected and honored. The\nProphet emphasizes his unity and oneness with Hussein when he says: \u2018Whosoever\nloves Hussein, has loved Allah, because the love of Hussein is the love of the\nProphet and the love of the Prophet is the love of Allah (SWT)\u2019\u201d7<\/p>\n\n\n\n
