\u201cThe other aspect in the personality of Hussain (PBUH) that has\nfascinated me is his humbleness along with his revolutionary spirit. These two\ntraits do not [usually] coexist in one personality. Humbleness is the trait and\ncharacteristic of the God\u2019s chosen ones. In spite of his honor, sense of\nfreedom and esteem in front of the enemies, he has his own type of humbleness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Usually the ignorant people, upon\npossessing sums of money or a position, look down upon others, and tend to\nimpose their thought and opinion upon others. These people would be alone, even\nif they were immersed in the society. In fact, human\u2019s arrogance stems from his\nignorance, negligence, and egoism. Arrogance detaches the individual from the\nsociety, and makes the individual cynical about the society, and makes the\npeople despise him. On the contrary, with the increase in the wisdom and\nknowledge of a person about God, his humbleness and modesty increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Especially, the public figures and\nrulers should be more humble, and they should avoid arrogance. It will be an\nact of corruption and rebellion if a ruler surpasses the ruled in terms of\ndressing, domicile and means of transportation, and if he creates resources and\nstructures in a way that those make him distinct from ordinary people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Hussain (PBUH) is a lucid\ninstance of humbleness and modesty. People respected him to an extent that when\nhe used to go to the Hajj pilgrimage, all the dignitaries and the grand\ncompanions used to descend from their horses, and walked beside him. (2) This\nrespect for Imam Hussain (PBUH) was not because he had mansions, expensive\nhorses, or an entourage of soldiers and servants; it was also not because they reserved\nthe mosque of the Prophet (PBUH&HP) for his arrival, or they forced a\npassage through the crowd for him. No! They respected him only because he lived\namong the people and was not detached from them, and he lived in extreme\nmodesty and humbleness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He went to the Hajj pilgrimage on foot\n25 times (3); he sat with the people and socialized with them; he interacted\nwith the poor; he served the needy, the poor, the widows and orphans with food;\nhe attended the public prayers; he visited the sick people; he attended the\nfunerals; he sat with his companions and friends in the mosque of his\ngrandfather, the great Prophet of Islam (PBUH&HP). Imam Hussain (PBUH) even\naccepted the invitation of the poor, and invited them too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For example, one day, Imam Hussain\n(PBUH) came across some poor people that had spread their cloaks on the ground,\nand were having tough bread. They invited Imam (PBUH) to join them. Imam (PBUH)\ndescended from his horse and said: \u201cAllah does not like the arrogant.\u201d(4) He\nsat with them and started to eat with them. Then he said: \u201cI accepted your\ninvitation, so you should accept my invitation too.\u201d Then he took them to his\nhouse, and told his servant: \u201cBring whatever you have put aside for the special\nand honorable guests,\u201d and served them. (5) <\/p>\n\n\n\n
These are just drops from the\nboundless ocean of Imam Hussain\u2019s (PBUH) modesty and humbleness. It is a great\nidea to follow our kind Imam whom we deeply love, and practice humbleness,\nwhich is a trait of the extraordinary servants of God according to the\nteachings of the Holy Quran.
