Muawiyah used to make efforts to\ndeceive the people in believing that his relationship with Hassan bin Ali\n(PBUH) is good in order to benefit from the popularity of the Ahl ul-bait\n(PBUT) for his own interests. In this respect he made a lot of efforts to\ndevelop marital ties with the Bani Hashem so that he pretend to be family.\nTherefore he sent Marwan bin Hakam, the ruler of Medina, to make a proposal for\nthe daughter of Abdullah bin Jaffar, Amir al-Moumenin\u2019s (PBUH) son in law (who\nwas also Imam Hassan and Imam Hossein\u2019s (PBUT) cousin) to marry his son Yazid.\nMuawiyah told to Marwan: \u201cfor we have insistence on this marriage you don\u2019t\nhave any limitations concerning financial promises, and because Abdullah is in\ndebt to a number of people, assure hum that his debs will be paid in full.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marwan bin Hakam delivered Muawiyah\u2019s\nmessage to Abdullah bin Jaffar, and he replied: \u201cwe have to consult our master\nHassan bin Ali (PBUH) and do what he suggests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marwan arranged for a meeting and\ninvited the notables from Bani Hashem and Bani Umayyad and made a place at the\ntop of the gathering for Imam Hassan (PBUH) and confidently presented the\nproposal of Muawiyah from the daughter of Abdullah for Yazid, and said:\n\u201cwhatever her father decides for the amount of dowry would be accepted, and we\nwill pay the debts of Abdullah; and between Bani Hashem and Bani Umayyad will\nbe a permanent peace as well.\u201d Then he continued: \u201cYazid is a young man with no\nequal. You have to know that by this marriage the horror received by Bani\nHashem will be much more than the horror received by Bani Umayyad \u2026\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After he finished his words, Imam\nHassan (PBUH) stood up and replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen you said\nthe dowry will be accepted no matter how much her father decides, you have to\nkeep in mind that in the marriage of our children we follow the tradition of\nthe Great Prophet (PBUH&HP) and we do not exceed what he recommended. With\nrespect to the debs of her father, it has never been a case in which we pay our\ndebs by the dowry of our daughters1. If there is a conflict between Bani Hashem\nand Bani Umayyad it is for the sake of Allah, and there will be no peace\nthrough the worldly affairs on this matter. With respect to your words that the\nhonor received by Bani Hashem from this marriage will be more than Bani\nUmayyad\u2019s, it should be said that if caliphate (as for ruling) was superior to\nprophethood, then what you say would be correct. However, prophethood is\nsuperior to caliphate, so it would be Umayyad who will receive the honor, and\nnot us\u2026 We saw it prudent that this girl marry her cousin Qasem bin Mohammad\nbin Jaffar, and I assigned for her dowry one of my agricultural pieces of land\nin Medinah, which Muawiyah had offered ten thousand dinars for this lanf and I\ndid not accept. For sure this will suffice them2.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Accordingly, Imam Hassan (PBUH)\nprevented that marriage which had the wicked intention of Muawiyah behind it.\nHe also stressed that the disagreement between Bani Hashem and Bani Umayyad is\nnot a tribal one, but rather a matter of religion and guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
