Imam Hassan (PBUH) was given the title\nthe benevolent of the Prophet\u2019s Progeny1, and this title fully illustrates the\ngenerosity of the Imam. History is\nfilled with incidents of the Imam\u2019s generosity.2 The Imam\u2019s stance on the act of charity and\nhis method of treating the poor and needy is exemplary for all mankind, a few\nof which we will present in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Imam was asked why he never\nrefuses a request from a person in need, even if the Imam himself was in need\nof that request. The Imam (PBUH)\nresponded: \u201cI too am a needy person in the presence of Allah, and hopeful for\nHis blessings and generosity. I\ntherefore feel ashamed (to not help the one in need) when I, myself, am a\nbeggar and in need of the Lord. Allah\nhas made me accustomed to the blessings He has always bestowed upon me. It is as though He too has become accustomed\nto me giving from His blessings to the people. \nI therefore fear breaking this habit and refusing the one who requests\n(something from me), for I fear that if I break this habit and refuse one who\nrequests, Allah will take away the benefit of his blessings.\u201d3<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nOnce a man visited the Imam (PBUH). The Imam asked for his purpose of visit. The man handed the Imam a written letter with\nhis request. The man put his request in\nwriting and the Imam offered him double his original request. Those present among the Imam\u2019s companions\nsaid, \u201cO son of Allah\u2019s messenger! The man\u2019s letter sure had a lot of blessings\nfor him!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Imam responded, \u201cThe blessings of\nthis letter was much more for us! For,\nthis letter placed us among the doers of good and the generous. Don\u2019t you know generosity becomes valuable\nonly when it is given before the person in need requests. If it is offered after the request, it would\nbe a response to his loss of face.\u201d4<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Month of Ramadan, the month of\nGod\u2019s blessings is a great opportunity for building oneself and creating change\nin society. One of the best acts of\nworship in this month is helping the poor and those in need. May we follow the example of the one born in\nthis month, the generous of the Ahlul Bayt (PBUT) and benefit from the\nblessings of this divine month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
