As Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH&HP)\nbody was being buried, so were his words about Imam Ali’s (PBUH) role and\nleadership in governing the Islamic Society. With eloquent speeches the Prophet\nintroduced Imam Ali (PBUH) as the “Imam of the pious (Mu\u2019minin)”, not\nas the “Imam of Muslims”. The Prophet implied that those who accepted\nIslam under political pressures will not come to accept the leadership of Imam\nAli (PBUH). But for those who accepted the leadership and Prophethood of\nProphet Muhammad (PBUH&HP), it is expected that they accept the leadership\nof Imam Ali (PBUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lady Fatimah would see that both the\nProphet and his words have passed away. She saw that his message was being\nstepped on by a stampede of new thoughts and ideas. She felt that she needed to\ndo something against this flood; otherwise everything would be forgotten,\nforever!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was here that with firm faith she\nentered Masjid al-Nabi and said to those who had submitted to the new power and\nhad rejected the Prophet\u2019s orders, \u201cWe will stand firm and patient against you\nlike a person whose body has been torn to pieces by spears and knives\u2026\u201d(1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People were amazed at Lady Fatimah’s\ncourage and ability to defend the Holy Prophet’s message. The following are a\nlist of some of her actions in this regard: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Resisting against\nthe alterations<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Inviting the\nMuhajirin and Ansar personally<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Presence in the\nmosque of the Prophet<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Presence in the\nshrine of the Martyrs<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Expressing her\ncomplaint in her speeches and meetings<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the last days of her life when Umm\nSalamah asked her about her overall situation, she explicitly announced, \u201cI am\ngrieving the loss of the Messenger of Allah, and I am saddened by the usurping\nof his successor\u2019s right\u201d (2). In another occasion she declared the same\nexpressions in further detail to the women of Medina who had came to visit her\nin her sickbed. She told them, \u201cBy Allah I began my day while I am disgustful\nof your actions in this world and angry of your husbands \u2026 Woe onto you. Why\ndid they reject this divine position (the succession of the Messenger of\nAllah), as defined by the Prophet? (And why did they) usurp the right of the\none who was more beneficial and aware of their worldly and hereafter affairs?\nWhat was their rancor towards Ali \u2026? By Allah if they had helped him take the\nreins of government, he would control it well \u2026 If they had done so, indeed the\ndoors of blessings of the heavens and the earth would have opened upon them.\u201d\n(3) <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And now, these words like the flames\nof candles are on the verge of going out, and she would say, \u201cCome and hear!\nFrom here on life will show you new and shocking matters\u2026.indeed the deeds of\nthese people are shocking! These people placed descendants before the\nforerunners, and they left the foremost (in faith) for the ones who were\nbehind. By God! Your ill actions will lead you to events in which you will see\ntheir negative results in the future\u2026\u201d (4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lady Fatimah (PBUH) would use every\nopportunity to warn and inform people, but they would ignore her calls. But\nwhat about the future? Who would inform them? How would she speak to them? What\ncan be done for them? And how could the message be delivered to the future\ngenerations when \u201cafter the demise of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP), his\nmessage was stepped on by seekers of power, who wanted Islam only for their own\nworldly benefits, and who took advantage of people\u2019s ignorance\u201d? And how can\nour objections reach history? How did Lady Fatimah (PBUH) convey her objections\nto the later generations? Because, in her time, she did not even have the\nfreedom to cry for the loss of her father and his message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The following is Lady Fatimah\u2019s will,\nin which she has slightly included her objections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fatimah, daughter of the messenger of\nAllah writes her will. She writes her will in a state of acknowledging the\noneness of Allah and the Prophethood of his servant, Muhammad. She bears\nwitness that Heaven is true; Hell is true; the Day of Judgment will arrive\nwithout hesitation, and Allah will bring the dead back to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ali! It is me, Fatimah: the daughter\nof Muhammad who gave me away to be your wife and your partner in this world and\nin the next. You are worthier than all others to do my rituals. Perform my\nburial ceremony at night, wash me and put on my burial garment; recite the\nburial prayer, and bury me at night. Do not inform others. May Allah protect\nyou, and I send peace upon my children till the Day of Judgment\u201d (5). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lady Fatimah (PBUH) had asked to be\nburied at night. Her request for hiding her shrine was in fact a message she\nwanted to send to history: a message for the entire Muslim Ummah that would\nlead to hearing her sad life story, and what her constant objections were. And\nthis in fact could be a turning point in the history of Islamic civilization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was because of this that Lady\nFatimah (PBUH) found life from death, victory from defeat, and an epic and\neverlasting peace from misery. She created a revolution in the hearts of all\ngenerations. Her heart still beats to the fate of the Muslim Ummah. And her\neyes await the flag of freedom that will appear with his son the Promised Mahdi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, like all other periods people\nface misery and oppression. We must look unto the secret of the hidden grave,\nand think about Lady Fatimah\u2019s tears and burning sighs, and retell her message\nas best we can to the rest of the world\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
