Nowadays, the issue of marriage of the\nyouth has become one of the most complicated social issues. In fact, very few\nfamilies can be found who have a young boy or girl and do not complain about\nthis issue. An abundance of severe difficulties has surrounded this important\nyet simple matter, and turned it into a terrifying monster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Numerous girls find themselves facing\nintolerable complexities and impassable barriers. On the other hand, numerous\nboys have passed their fresh years of youth while still looking for an\nopportunity to build a family; however, the awful social customs and the\nincorrect traditions which involve this matter prevent them from doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is surprising that this is a common\nproblem among both rich and poor families! That is because they both bear a\npile of unreasonable expectations, and suffer the weight of fictitious customs.\nWhat is more depressing is that when the foundations (of a family) are laid\nimproperly, the whole structure will be built improperly, and because it does\nnot have a firm basis, it is consistently prone to fluctuation, instability, and\nagitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For example, a couple who intend to\nstart their family life should have a minimum level of amenities; otherwise,\nthey would be dependent upon their parents, which causes trouble for the\nparents and ruins the independence of the couple. However, most of the people\nhave forgotten the fact that it is to the interest of the couple to start their\nfamily life simply, and that growing their properties should be done gradually.\nIndeed, living such a lifestyle is much easier, and such a simple life is filled\nwith kindness, love, and sincerity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is worth to take a look on the\nformation of a unique family in the history of Islam which the Great Prophet of\nIslam (PBUH&HP) had direct supervision on it, i.e. the marriage of Imam Ali\n(PBUH) with the Lady of Islam, Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (PBUH). The way this\nmarriage was arranged can be a complete and valuable example for all Muslims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is narrated that when Imam Ali\n(PBUH) went to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) to ask for Lady Fatimah\u2019s (PBUH)\nhand in marriage, the Prophet (PBUH&HP) asked him, \u201dWhat would you offer as\nMahr and Sidaq?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Ali (PBUH) replied,\u201d My sword,\nhorse, armor, and the camel I use for irrigation (i.e. all my belongings) (1)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP)\nconsidered the sword and horse to be needed by Imam Ali (PBUH). Therefore, all\nthe Mahr of Lady Fatimah (PBUH), the cost of her life properties, and her\nperfumes were purchased through selling Imam Ali\u2019s (PBUH) armor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hence, all what Imam Ali (PBUH) had\nfor his wedding ceremony was the money he got from selling his armor by the\norder of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP), and he used that money to buy\n\u201cperfumes\u201d, \u201ccloth\u201d, and \u201clife properties\u201d for Lady Fatimah (PBUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The value of that armor, based on\ndifferent narrations, was 30, 480, or 500 Dirhams (2), and considering that a\n\u201cDirham\u201d is about 2.3 grams of silver coin, it is easy to calculate the price\nof the armor and all the things bought as their dowry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is concluded from a narration that\nonly a third of the value of the armor was used to buy the dowry, and using\nthis narration, it can be inferred how simple the lifestyle of this prosperous\ncouple was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The detailed list of the dowry of Lady\nFatimah (PBUH) has been narrated by historians. Studying this list reveals a\nworld of sincerity, asceticism, and nobleness, and its greatness and glory\nmakes any free person humble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The detailed list of the dowry, as\nprepared by Prophet Muhammad\u2019s (PBUH&HP) companions for his unique\ndaughter, is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. An Egyptian\ncarpet filled with wool<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. A leather\ntable-cloth<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3. A leather\npillow filled with leaves of date-palm<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. A Khaybari\ncloth<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5. A water\ncontainer made of leather<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6. Several jugs<\/p>\n\n\n\n
7. Several clay\ndishes and bowls<\/p>\n\n\n\n
8. A pot for\nwashing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
9. A thin woolen\ncurtain<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was her dowry, according to the\nnarrations (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the abovementioned items were\npresented to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP), he looked at them and started\ncrying. Then, he turned his face towards the sky and made a strange prayer\nas:\u201dO Allah! Make this auspicious to the people whose dishes are mostly\nearthen! (4)\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What Lady Fatimah (PBUH) and her\nhusband manifested as an example and role model, not only was simple according\nto today\u2019s measures, but also was considered simple at that time. It was so\nsimple that the worldly people of that time whose souls were still contaminated\nwith the sediments of “the values of the ignorance era” blamed Lady\nFatimah (PBUH) for the simplicity of her husband’s life. Nonetheless, Lady\nFatimah (PBUH) meant to teach a lesson to people of all times and all\ngenerations; she wanted to show that Islam is not based on luxuriance or\nmaterialistic competitions which result in delay in marriage and corruption of\nthe Muslim society. The foundation and basis of every affair is always\nsimplicity and ease while maintaining glory, freeness, kindness, and sincerity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
