The old Christian man had worked his\nlifetime to make a living but did not have any savings left in the end. As he\nhad become old and blind, he was left with no choice but to beg. He would stand\nby an ally and ask for people\u2019s help. People would give him a bare minimum out\nof pity, which he could hardly make a living from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One day, Amir al-Mu\u2019menin Ali Ibn\nAbitalib (PBUH) passed by the same ally and saw the old blind man. He requested\nan investigation on the old man\u2019s past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Ali (PBUH) expressed his shock,\nsaying to his companions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUp until he was\nable, you made him work; but now that he is in such a condition, you have left\nhim? His history shows that he has worked for as long as he could have and\nserved [the community]. Pay him a fixed amount from the treasury (Beyt\nal-Mal)\u201d1<\/p>\n\n\n\n
