Amir al-Mu\u2019menin (PBUH) is flawless\nexample in living simple. He made a living through his daily work to manage his\npersonal life. He would carry heavy water containers for those unable to do so,\nplant trees, and he would get paid for watering the gardens of other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amir al-Mu\u2019menin (PBUH) was\nexceptionally humble. He would help his spouse in home chores, make his own\nflour by hand, repair his own shoes, and much more. Once, when the Prophet of\nAllah (PBUH&HP) came to the house of Lady Fatimah (PBUH), he found both\nLady Fatimah and Amir al-Mu\u2019menin (PBUH) cleaning lentils for their meal. The\nProphet of Allah was moved, saying \u201cThere is no man who helps his wife at home,\nexcept that Allah (SWT) bestows upon him good deeds by the count of the hairs\non his body (implying infinite blessings), as though he had been spending an\nentire year fasting during the days and praying throughout each night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those who got to know Amir al-Mu\u2019menin\n(PBUH) would come to discover that Imam Ali (PBUH) was far from any proudness\nand arrogance. He lived a simple life\njust like the rest of society, but one that matched more to those on the lower\nend of economy. Suwaid Ibn Qaflah narrates, \u201cI went to visit Amir al-Mu\u2019menin\n(PBUH) on a day after where everyone had pledged their allegiance to him to\nrule the Muslim Ummah. I found him sitting on a carpet made of palm\nleaves. There were no other carpets in\nhis house. I made a polite request saying, \u2018O Commander of the Faithful, the\ntreasury of all Muslims is in your control; please purchase a carpet for the\nhouse; I see that there is no carpet in the house other than a palm mat\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amir al-Mu\u2019menin (PBUH) replied: \u201cO\nSuwaid! He who is traveling, and is in a temporary inn to depart shortly does\nnot invest in tools and equipment for the inn. We will be departing this world\nvery soon to be in our everlasting homes in the hereafter. Why should we buy\nexpensive carpets for here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moreover, Amir al-Mu\u2019menin (PBUH) was\nextremely careful about the Bayt ul Mal (treasury of the Muslim Umma) and\nspending from it. During the cold weather, he would cover himself with a towel\nfrom his personal belongings, and even when he was shivering from the cold he\nwould not spend from the treasury for his personal comfort. He would even go as\nfar as selling his war Armor to make up for part of his family\u2019s financial needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During his rule over the Muslims,\ntaking care of the poor and the unprivileged were amongst his first\npriorities. Not only did he order his\nmen to oversee the matter, but he would also act personally to carry out the\nmatter. Imam Ali (PBUH) would carry bread\nand dates for the poor on his own shoulder and deliver them personally. His\ncompanions would say: \u201cO Amir al-Mu\u2019menin (PBUH) allow us to carry this load\u2026\u201d\nand Imam Ali (PBUH) would reply, \u201cThe leader of a nation is more deserving to\ncarry the load.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These are glimpses into the life of a\ndivine man, for who everyone from friends to foes are stunned at his moral acts\nand virtues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
