The martyrdom of Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\n(PBUH) is far from our understanding unless we know more about the Imam. And it\nis such that we cannot even comprehend what it means to lose such a magnanimous\nperson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indeed speaking of Amir al-Mu\u2019minin is\na difficult task; his virtues and excellencies are too many to be able to\nchoose. How ironic that his virtues were\nwithheld from being told, (his friends could not express his virtues from fear,\nand his enemies would not express his virtues from hatred and jealousy), and\nyet his virtues filled the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hiding the virtues of such a person is\nnot easy and even the worst of his enemies admit this fact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The following example has been\nnarrated in both Sunni and Shia sources: \nZirar ibn Zamrah al-Kinani entered upon Mu\u2019awiyah. Mu\u2019awiyah demanded Zirar to speak of Ali\u2019s\n(PBUH) character.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zirar asked to be dismissed from this\ntask. Mu\u2019awiyah did not allow. Zirar\nthen spoke: \u201cWell since I do not have a choice, I will begin. He is far from\npeople\u2019s understanding of people. A strong man; his word was truth and final;\nhe judged fairly; knowledge would erupt from him and insight was obvious within\nhim. He was weary of the world and its benefits, and personal with night and its\ndarkness. By Allah he cried immensely and thought extensively … He would\nsuffice to the simplest and least in clothing. And instead of soft and\ndelicious food, he would choose to eat rough and hard food without anything to\nsoften it like stew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By Allah he was like one of us;\nanytime we would approach him, he would come toward us, and anytime we had a\nrequest from him, he would answer us. \nAnd even though he was close to us, we wouldn\u2019t allow ourselves to speak\nto him because of the respect he had. His\nsmile was like a pearl, it would organize people of religion, and it would give\nlove to the poor. Men in power did not\nfeel coveted by him in their void acts, and the weak were hopeful to his\njustice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By Allah I would see him at times when\nit was dark, where even a single star could not be seen, he would go toward his\nprayer altar, he would hold his chin, and cry immensely. I can even hear it now that he would say: O\u2019\nMy Lord, O\u2019 My Lord\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He would supplicate to Allah, and\nwould then tell the world: You have desires for me, you are so fond of\nme?! Never! Never! Make someone else proud! Trick some other! I\ndistance myself from you every second. I divorce you thrice for your life is\ntoo short, and time for you is so invaluable. I cry for the few provisions of\nmy journey, from the far distance of my path, and from its fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mu\u2019awiyah\u2019s tears then began to flow\nuncontrollably; he dried them with his sleeves, and it was here that those\npresent also began to cry. Mu\u2019awiyah\nthen said: Yes, this is how Ab al-Hassan was \u2026 (1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
