One of man\u2019s greatest attributes is\ngreat-heartedness. Great-Heartedness is\nthe attribute of being patient, tolerant, and holding a big heart. Narrow- heartedness is the opposite, which\ncan be defined as intolerance and bad-tempered. \nAccording to the Holy Quran great-heartedness is the introduction to\nguidance, whereas narrow- heartedness is the sign of deviation. \u201cThose whom Allah (in His plan) wills to\nguide,- He opens their breast (chest) to Islam; those whom He wills to leave\nstraying,- He makes their breast (chest) close and constricted, as if they had\nto climb up to the skies: thus does Allah (lay) the penalty (uncleanliness) on\nthose who refuse to believe.\u201d. 1,2 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Great-heartedness is a great\ninvestment. When Prophet Musa (PBUH) was\ncommanded by Allah (SWT) to confront the Pharaoh, the first thing he asks from\nAllah is a big-heart. He was told,\n\u201c(Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh – Lo! he has rebelled.\u201d3 Prophet Musa (PBUH) had realized that he\nneeded a powerful spiritual force to deal with the heavy responsibility given\nto him. Prophet Musa (PBUH) saw that he\nwas left to deal with a selfish and arrogant man like the Pharaoh on the one\nhand, and on the other to deal with the ignorant clan of Bani Israeel who kept\nrenewing their demands, failing to obey the laws, and cause trouble; the same\nclan who when he returned from Miqat had begun worshiping a cow instead of\nAllah (SWT)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the Holy Prophet (PBUH) had been\nappointed by Allah (SWT), he raised his hands in prayer, saying, \u201cMy Lord! The\nfirst weapon I ask from you in this battlefield is great-heartedness; expand my\nbosom, deepen my soul as that of a deep sea so it does not storm when faced\nwith various incidents.\u201d4<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was indeed the great-heartedness of\nProphet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) that had filled up his life with utmost\nmorality. During the time he lived in\nMecca, he did not have any power, and was attacked by the None-believers from\nall directions, and could not defend himself. \nBut in Medinah he was at the head of power, and had established a\npowerful government, in which the Jewish clan had to abide by the laws of that\ngovernment. He could have acted cruelly\nwith those who disdained him, just as many leaders during the time had done so. But instead, his divinely gifted great-heartedness\nmade the bearing of all the harms, both the physical and emotional harms\npossible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As an example, a young man from a\nJewish family because of family prejudices and animosity with the Prophet\nMuhammad (PBUH&HP) would pour a bucket full of ashes upon the passing of\nthe prophet by their house on a daily basis to make his clothes filthy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP) had\ntold his companions that they were not to \u201cshow a reaction towards the harm and\noffense of this person to me. And if\nanyone does so in my absence, I ban you from telling me and tarnish my heart\ntowards him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Time passed and this situation\ncontinued to repeat. One day the kind\nprophet realized that the man had not shown himself. Several days passed and still no sign of the\nyoung man. Prophet Muhammad\n(PBUH&HP) asked for the health of the man, just as a friend would seek the\nhealth of his friend. His companions\nsaid that the young man was ill and in his sickbed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP) asked\nhis companions after to prayer to join him in visiting the young man. They\narrived at a house where his companions said, \u201cThis here is the house of a\nJewish man.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prophet said, \u201cI know!\u201d He then\nknocked. The young man\u2019s father opened\nthe door, and was shocked upon seeing the Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP) at his\ndoor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prophet (PBUH&HP) said, \u201cYour\nson is sick, I have come to visit him; I will sit a few moments then\nleave.\u201d The man was humbled, and ran to\nthe room of his son saying, \u201cO son! Do not sit for the Prophet of Islam has\ncome to visit you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The young man felt so ashamed of his\ndoing and the kindness of the Prophet that he ducked his head under the blanket\nso he would not have to face the prophet. \nThe Prophet (PBUH&HP) sat by his bed, and said, \u201cYoung man, you used\nto come out and remember me on a daily basis, and its been a few days that you\nhave not come. I have heard you are\nsick, so I have come to visit you and pray for you so the Lord would heal you\nand make you successful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The young man felt so ashamed, that he\ncried while reciting, \u201cI bear witness to Allah that there is no god but Allah\nand that you are the Messenger of Allah\u201d. \nHe became Muslim, and in that day the young man\u2019s entire family also\nbecame Muslim\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
