One of the most important events that\nattracted people to Islam was Prophet Muhammad\u2019s (PBUH&HP) sublime manners,\nnamely his overall nature, contentment, patience, and demeanor. The following\naccount is an example of Prophet Muhammad\u2019s (PBUH&HP) forbearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On his way towards conquering Mecca\nwith an army of about ten-thousand people, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP)\nordered his men to torch a piece of wood and hold it high. At the time, Abu\nSufyan, who was a citizen of Mecca and was doing his best to fight Islam and\nprevent its spread, e.g. as commander in leading several wars against Islam and\nthe Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP), sent an envoy to obtain news from around the\ncity. When the envoy did not return, Abu Sufyan went to analyze the situation\nhimself. When he realized that the Non-Believers were not prepared enough for\nwar and that their defeat is certain, he agreed to the suggestion of one of his\nsoldiers and headed to the Prophet (PBUH&HP) to ask for a respite. The holy\nprophet granted him a respite until morning.(1) In the morning, Abu Sufyan was\nbrought to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) and accepted to become a Muslim \u2013\nalthough apparently and not sincerely- to be safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After that, the Prophet (PBUH&HP)\nsaid to him, \u201creturn, you and the ones in your house are safe. Tell the\nresidents, whoever stays home and closes the doors is safe\u201d(2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prophet Muhammad\u2019s (PBUH&HP) plan\nfor secretly moving the Muslim army towards Mecca startled the Non-Believers,\nwho took to their houses and left only a few to fight. As a result, the Muslim\narmy conquered Mecca with minimum fighting, which ties in with the Prophet\u2019s\n(PBUH&HP) command of \u201cdo not start a war unless others initiate it\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This historical account clearly\nillustrates that the Prophet (PBUH&HP) managed to conquer Mecca with the\nleast possible fight, and even then granted security to Abu-Sufyan instead of\nkilling or captivating him. It is noteworthy that Abu Sufyan was responsible\nfor expelling, murdering, and torturing Muslims and the holy Prophet\u2019s\n(PBUH&HP) family. In addition, the others who had taken shelter in their\nhouses were pardoned in spite of their fights against Islam. These people had\nbeen asked to become Muslims in previous years, but had refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the Muslims arrived in Mecca,\nthey chanted \u201ctoday is the day of bloodshed\u201d. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP)\nbecame sad and changed the slogan to, \u201ctoday is the day of mercy and\nforbearance\u201d. This was not the first sample of the Prophet\u2019s (PBUH&HP)\nforbearance that people had observed. Being kind to slaves, pardoning the\nsinners, doing good to the enemies, and avoiding avenging are just a few of the\nProphet (PBUH&HP)\u2019s demeanor as observed on various occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This forbearance resulted in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Attracting Non-Believers to Islam (due\nto the noble moral of Prophet (PBUH&HP))<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Preventing bloodshed and further\nhatred;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Welcoming Islam by Non-Believers, who\nwere at severe financial losses and casualties because of their leaders; this\nhelped the growth of Islam<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indeed! Forbearance and benevolence\nwere the Prophet Muhammad\u2019s (PBUH&HP) approach. Now the question one should\nask him\/herself is whether those who kill and torture both Muslims and\nNon-Muslims in the name of Islam are followers of Islam? Or are they just using\nthe name of Islam?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
