As Islam is a religion of living, it\nhas provided guidelines and rituals that suite a person\u2019s life in any\nsituation. The guidelines are given to us through the teachings of Allah (SWT)\nand Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP), so to help mankind in every aspect of its\nsocial and personal affairs such that servitude fills every aspect of life.\nThus, by utilizing the guidelines in his\/her daily life, a person can\nexperience the prosperous life Allah (SWT) has intended for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the most comprehensive teachings\nis the teaching and training of children. As children are God given signs and\nblessings under our care (1), parents are responsible (2) towards their health,\ngrowth and education. According to the Holy Quran, parents are rewarded for the\nproper teaching (3) of their children and reprimanded for inappropriate (4)\nteaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the teachings of Prophet\nMuhammad (PBUH&HP) parents have certain duties in regards to their\nchildren, that they must strive to complete them well. For instance some of\nthese duties are as follows: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. Dignifying\nchildren:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Dignify\nyour children and train them well and you will be forgave.” (5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. Choosing a\ngood name:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) has\nsaid, \u201cIt is a child\u2019s right, that his\/her father chooses a good name for\nhim\/her.\u201d(6) Likewise he has said, \u201cA\nchild\u2019s first gift from his\/her father is that he\/she receives a good name.\u201d(7)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3. Showing\naffection to child:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP) has\nsaid, \u201cWhoever kisses his\/her child, Allah will reward him.\u201d(8) In another\nsaying, it has been recorded, \u201cKiss your children frequently\u2026.\u201d(9)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Along the same lines it has been\nnarrated that one day Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) was kissing Hassan and\nHussain (PBUT) when a person saw the scene and said, \u201cI have ten children, and\nhave never kissed any one of them.\u201d The Prophet (PBUH&HP) became so\ndisturbed, that his face turned red and said to the man, \u201cWhoever does not show\naffection to our young, and does not respect our elders, is not from us.\u201d(10)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. A child\u2019s\nhealth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prophet of Allah (PBUH&HP) has\nsaid: \u201cWash your children from dirt, for the Satan smells dirt, which causes\nfear of child in sleep, and the angels accompanying the child will be bothered\nas well.\u201d(11)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5. A child\u2019s\nnutrition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Islam has paid specific attention to a\nchild\u2019s nutrition, especially during his\/her infancy. It has given great value\nto a mother who breastfeeds her child. Along these lines, Prophet Muhammad\n(PBUH&HP) has said, \u201cWhen a mother has completed her breastfeeding phase, a\ngreat angel will address her saying, \u201cThe Lord has forgiven (your sins) …\u201d(12)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6. Teaching and\ntraining children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP) has\nsaid, \u201cWhoever teaches his children Quran, on the Day of Judgment, the child\u2019s\nparents will be summoned and given clothes of light, which will brighten the\nfaces of those in heaven.\u201d(13)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Likewise, in another saying, the\nProphet speaks about the reward of parents when they teach Quran to their kids\nand train them according to the love of the Great Prophet and Imam Ali (PBUT),\n\u201cOn the Day of Judgment, everyone will be staring at the father and mother and\nexalt them.\u201d(14)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
7. Teaching\nsocial and defense skills:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) has\nsaid, \u201cTeach your children the art of swimming and bowmanship.\u201d(15)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also he had pointed to Amir\nal-Mu’minin Ali (PBUH), \u201cO Ali! A child\u2019s right is that his\/her father teaches\nhim\/her good manners and places him\/her well in the society.\u201d(16)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
8. Children\u2019s\nmarriage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) has\nsaid, \u201cIt is a child\u2019s right upon his father to seek him\/her a spouse after\nhis\/her maturity age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
9. Assistance to\nChildren:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) has\nsaid, \u201cMay Allah place His mercy upon the one who assists his\/her children in\ngood deeds.\u201d It was asked, \u201cHow to help the child in good deeds?\u201d Prophet said,\n\u201cFor the parent to accept what he\/she can do and to forgive what\u2019s difficult\nfor him\/her\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
10. Justice\namongst the children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prophet of Allah (PBUH&HP)\nsaid, \u201cBe just among your children; as you would like them to be fair in\nkindness to you.\u201d(19)\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To a man who had two children, but\nonly kissed one, the Prophet (PBUH&HP) said, \u201cWhy did you not treat the two\nequally?\u201d(20)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Similarly, the Prophet (PBUH&HP)\nsaid, \u201cMake sure you consider fairness in gift giving to your kids.\u201d(21)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indeed all the high regards given to\nthe children and their training in all aspects from the Islamic point of view\nis to say that children are men and women of the future. Therefore, if children\nare trained properly, society will also be on the right track. Otherwise, the\nhuman society will be led astray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
