Introduction<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appointment of\nMuhammad (PBUH&HP), the Prophet of Islam and his selection as the\nMessenger of Allah (SWT), can be considered the most significant event in the history of\nIslam. Descent of the Holy Quran began at this time. The word Bi’that<\/em> means\nto be chosen and its expressional meaning is “being\nchosen by the Almighty Allah to guide people”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can be concluded from\nthe Islamic and historical texts that the appointment of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) had\nbeen stated in divine religions before his birth. Believers of other\nreligions and\nseveral Arab pagans had some previous acquaintance with the last prophet.\nProphet Jesus (PBUH) has announced and foreshadowed in the New Testament the\nappearance of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP). Even in\nOld Testament, some of the specialties of the Prophet (PBUH&HP) and\nhis followers had been mentioned. Thus “as the Holy Quran mentions”\nthe scholars of other religions knew the Prophet as well as their closest\nrelatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to history, there\nwere many people who had been waiting for the appointment and appearance of the\nlast prophet. Even some tribes had migrated to the Prophet’s (PBUH&HP) residence.\nA Christian priest whose name was “Bohayra<\/em>“, was an\nexample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appointment of Prophet\nMuhammad (PBUH&HP) has had a great affect on the human\nguidance destiny. Due to the significance of this incidence; Allah (SWT) Himself\nlooked after His Messenger and trained him for his difficult future. So, it\ndoes not seem strange that he was innocent and infallible before the\nappointment as a result of such divine training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imam Ali (PBUH) said\nthat: “The Allah had His greatest angle train the Prophet during all days\nand guided him to the ways of moral virtues and greatness.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) suffered\na lot from the ignorance and corruption in the society at that time, especially\nin Mecca. In order to meditate and worship in privacy, he also secluded\nfrom people to a cave called “Haraa”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This seclusion was a basis\nfor improving Prophet’s (PBUH&HP) morality, a premise\nfor his appointment (Bi’that<\/em>) and descent of revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imam Ali (PBUH), who was\nbrought up by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP),\naccompanied him during these seclusions as other cases in his life. He used to\ntake provisions, water, and food for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the praying time came\nup, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) returned to Mecca and\ncircumambulated Kaaba before going home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was until he reached\nforty. At that time the Prophet (PBUH&HP) was\nthe meekest, the most superior and obedient person towards Allah (SWT).  Therefore,\nAllah (SWT) appointed him as a prophet in order to guide human beings to\nworship Him and not the idols, by means of the Holy Quran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Descent\nof the first revelation (<\/strong><\/a>Wahy<\/em><\/strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shiites commentators\nbelieve that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) was\nappointed on 27th<\/sup> of Rajab, five years after the rehabilitation\nof Kaaba. He was forty years old at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) had\ncome to Haraa cave as usual to say prayers and meditate. On 27th<\/sup> of\nRajab, Gabriel (one of the four superior angels who was ordered by Allah (SWT) to\nconvey revelation to prophets) descended to him. Gabriel shook Prophet\nMuhammad’s (PBUH&HP) arm and said: “O Muhammad!\nRead!” He replied:” What shall I read?” Gabriel recited the\nbeginning verses of Chapter (Surah) al-Alaq<\/em>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In the name of\nAllah, the compassionate, the merciful. Read in the name of your Lord who has\ncreated.<\/em><\/strong> Has\ncreated man from a leech [Spermatozoa]. Read and your Lord is the most honorable,\nwho taught (to write) with the pen; taught man what he knew not.<\/em><\/strong>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some great events happened\nat the time of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH&HP) appointment.\nFor instance, a groan was heard. Imam Ali (PBUH) says\nabout that: “I heard Satan’s groan when the first revelation was\ndescended. I asked the Prophet: “What was that?” He answered:\n“it was Satan, who got disappointed by not being obeyed.” He also\nsaid: “You hear what I hear and see what ever I see; except you are\nnot a prophet. You are my assistant and you will never leave the right\nway.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned before, Imam\nAli (PBUH) accompanied Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) in\ndifferent cases such as his seclusion periods. This narration, written in Nahj\nal-Balaghah, implies that he was with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) when\nrevelation was descended for the first time. It is inferred through the history\nthat he was the only person with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) at\nthat time. Nobody else has claimed to be with Him then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel ascended after\nconveying revelation and accomplishing his job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prophet <\/strong><\/a>(PBUH&HP)<\/strong> after\nreceiving the first revelation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prophet (PBUH&HP) was\nnot an ordinary man; therefore he had experienced some kind of revelations\nprior to his appointment. However, the subject of the first revelationwas\ncompletely different from the previous ones. After receiving\nsuch revelation the Prophet’s (PBUH&HP) spiritual\nand physical condition changed. The reason for such changes could be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Prophet felt dignity of\nAlmighty Allah (SWT) more than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. When Prophet (PBUH&HP) was\nappointed, he had become responsible for a great mission (Risalat)<\/em>. It\nshould be noted that at that time the Arabs were experiencing anarchy. Thus\npagans would oppose him. They would deny him and accuse him of improper things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, Almighty\nAllah (SWT) verified His Messenger and made Him ready for the great\nmission (Risalat)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Return\nfrom cave Haraa<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After this revelation,\nProphet (PBUH&HP) returned to His home in Mecca. When\nhe arrived home, he explained the story of his appointment to his wife.\nKhadijah (PBUH), who had recognized the Prophet’s (PBUH&HP) dignity\nand truthfulness for years, said: “By God, it is a long time that I have\nbeen waiting for this very day; and I was hoping that one day you would become\nthe Leader and the Messenger of these people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ndescent of Chapter (Surah) al-Muddathir<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/strong>In the\nfirst days of Prophet’s appointment, while he was resting, Gabriel descended\nand read the first verses of Chapter al-Muddathir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Chapter of the Holy\nQuran contains verses, which say that from then on, the Prophet had to\npay all his attention to warn people to obey Allah (SWT).\nTherefore, the first verses of the Holy book of Islam were revealed to Prophet\nand he was assigned to be the Messenger of Allah (SWT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First\nMuslims<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we said before, the\nProphet (PBUH&HP) was always accompanied with Ali (PBUH), because\nAli (PBUH) was very close to Him. When the first verses were revealed\nto Prophet (PBUH&HP) in cave Haraa, Ali (PBUH) was\nthere. He was the first person among all the people, men and women, who\nbelieved Prophet (PBUH&HP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through his sermons (Khotbe<\/em>)\nin Nahj al-Balaghah<\/em>, he repeated many times:” I was born\nto worship one Allah and I was the first one who believed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first woman, who\nconverted to Islam, according to what all the Islamic historians say and used\nto say, was Khadijah (PBUH) because she was the first person whom the Prophet (PBUH&HP) met\nafter the appointment. Moreover, she had confessed His prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After these two great\npersons, we can name Aboodhar Ghifaari as one of the first person that\nconverted to Islam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After\nappointment<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the appointment,\nGabriel descended. Bringing some water from the heavens, he taught ablution to\nthe Prophet and taught him bending and prostration in prayer. Furthermore,\nGabriel descended other commands gradually. The Prophet (PBUH&HP) taught\nthese commands to Muslims and they obeyed him. For example, about prayer,\nAli (PBUH) and Khadijah (PBUH) were\nthe first people who said their prayers behind the Prophet (PBUH&HP). They\nused to read their noon prayer beside Kaaba. However, most of time for safety\nreasons they had to read it where they could not be observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this period, the\nProphet (PBUH&HP) gradually began his secret invitation to\nIslam. This will be explained more in the following parts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
