The Great Prophet (PBUH&HP) left\nthis world in the situation where the Islamic society was in one of its worst\nsituation; from one side it was threatened by the Roman and Persian empires (in\nwhich Prophet\u2019s emphasis on preparing Usama\u2019s army attests to this fact) and\nfrom another, internal conflicts were also created on daily basis by the\nhypocrites, nonbelievers and Jews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is obvious in such situation if the\ngovernor was an ordinary person he would not have left his nation without a\nreplacement in his place. How does it\nseem logical for the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HP) (whom according to the Quran cares the most\nfor the Muslims, and would put forth all his efforts towards the comfort of his\npeople1) to leave the Islamic community without a successor, a guide before\ndeparting this world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To believe this is the greatest offense\ntowards the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HP) because such a decision would\nleave the Islamic community with the greatest dilemma and naturally leave the\nclaim of Dr. Ahmad Amin, an Egyptian scholar, true. Dr. Amin claims that the Holy Prophet\n(PBUH) \u201cleft this world without\nappointing a successor or clarifying the requirements needed for the\nappointment of a ruler, and leaving the Islamic community with the greatest and\nmost dangerous situation.\u201d2<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ibn Khaldoon also describes the\nlogical point of appointing a successor as such, \u201cIt is impossible to leave a\nsociety without a leader and guide; for this would be the cause of conflicts\nbetween the people and politicians. For\nthis reason, it is crucial to have appointed leader to protect the society from\nchaos.\u201d3<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the other hand, the Ahlul Sunnah\nnarrate a saying from the Prophet (PBUH&HP) saying that the prophet has\nsaid, \u201cAll prophets have had successors and heirs.\u201d4 Also narrated from Salman\nFarsi, \u201cthey asked the Prophet, \u2018Every prophet had a successor, who is your\nsuccessor?\u20195\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now ask yourself, was the Prophet of\nIslam an exception from among all other prophets? Therefore, it is not acceptable that the\nProphet of Islam would leave his people without appointing a successor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even the companions of the Holy\nProphet viewed the act of not appointing a successor illogical. According to the Ahlul Sunnah, Hafsah asks\nUmar to choose a successor after himself, and was followed by Abdullah ibn Umar\u2019s\ncomments who also said, \u201cIf your shepherd leaves your livestock without a\nguide, you would complain to him saying, why did you cause their destruction.\nTherefore, think about the people of this Ummah and appoint a leader for them. Because being considerate for the people is\nmore important than being considerate for the livestock.\u201d6<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even Muawiyah entered the city of\nMedina to obtain allegiance for his son Yazid. He said to Abdullah ibn Umar, \u201cI\nam afraid that I will leave the community of the Prophet to themselves similar\nto when a shepherd leaves his sheep.\u201d7<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is extremely offensive to the Holy\nProphet (PBUH&HP) to not think about his people as much as those around him\ndid, and leave them without a guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the other hand, the life of the Holy\nProphet (PBUH&HP) illustrates the contrary, that in fact even when he would\nleave the town of Medina for a few days, he would make sure to leave one of his\ncompanions in charge.8<\/p>\n\n\n\n
History has recorded that the Prophet\nhad left Ibn Amm Maktoom in charge 13 times during his absence for the battles\nof Badr, Uhud, Abawa\u2019, Soweeq, Dhat al-Riqa\u2019, and etc.9 Abu Rahem was also left\nin charge in Mecca during the wars of Hunain and Kheibar; Muhammad ibn Muslameh\nwas left in charge during the battle of Gherghere; Numailah ibn Abdullah during\nBani Mustalaq, and Aweef in charge during Hudaibiyah.10<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Considering the above examples, how is\nit possible that the Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP) would leave someone in charge\nduring the battle of Khandaq, which was near himself in Medinah, but not leave\nsomeone in charge during the lengthy time after his departure from this world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The greater Ahlul Sunnah scholars have\nnarrated, \u201cWhen the Prophet invited the Arab tribes to Islam, some of the more\nwell-known men of the time like Bani Amer ibn Sa\u2019sa\u2019e would ask, \u2018if you become\nsuccessful and victorious (in your call to Islam), would we gain any leadership\nand succession positions after you?\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Holy Prophet responded,\n\u2018Appointment of leadership is not up to me, but in the hands of Allah, and He\nwould choose anyone whom He desires.\u201911\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Shiites believe that the Holy\nProphet (PBUH&HP) certainly did not leave his nation without a successor,\nin fact according to divine command and in many instances, namely the Day of\nGhadir, Ali (PBUH) was introduced to the Muslims, to the Islamic community as\nhis successor and guardian after him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
