Introduction<\/h3>\n

Divine religions have consistently emphasized women\u2019s modest dress. In Islam, due to the distinct natures of men and women, God prescribes different guidelines for each. In Islamic law, the woman\u2019s prescribed covering is commonly termed \u1e25ij\u0101b<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Meaning of \u1e24ij\u0101b<\/h3>\n

a) Lexical meaning.<\/strong> In Arabic, \u1e25ij\u0101b<\/em> primarily means (1) a barrier or partition between two things,[1] and (2) covering or concealment.[2]
b) Technical (religious) meaning.<\/strong> In Islamic usage, \u1e25ij\u0101b<\/em> refers to the specific covering for women that prevents non-ma\u1e25ram men from viewing their hair and body.<\/p>\n

\n

Qur\u2019anic Verses on Women\u2019s \u1e24ij\u0101b<\/h2>\n

1) Al-A\u1e25z\u0101b (33):59<\/h3>\n
\n

\u201cO Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their outer garments (jal\u0101b\u012bb<\/em>) over themselves. That is more suitable so that they may be recognized [as chaste] and not harmed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The verse uses yudn\u012bna \u2018alayhinna min jal\u0101b\u012bbihinna<\/strong>. Jal\u0101b\u012bb<\/em> is the plural of jilb\u0101b<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Jilb\u0101b.<\/strong> From the aggregate of linguistic and exegetical studies, jilb\u0101b<\/strong> is an all-encompassing outer garment that covers not only the hair, neckline, and chest, but even extends lower to fully conceal the body.[3] The verse instructs believing women to cast<\/strong> (not gather upward) their outer garments over themselves so they are known for modesty and thus not harassed or harmed.[4]<\/p>\n

2) Al-N\u016br (24):31<\/h3>\n
\n

\u201cAnd tell the believing women \u2026 not to display their adornment except what [ordinarily] appears thereof; and let them draw their headcovers (khumur<\/em>) over their bosoms.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The phrase wal-ya\u1e0dribna bi-khumurihinna \u2018al\u0101 juy\u016bbihinna<\/strong> uses khumur<\/em>, plural of khim\u0101r<\/strong>\u2014a headcover worn by women (essentially a scarf or veil).[5] The verse commands women to draw their khim\u0101r<\/strong> over the juy\u016bb<\/strong> (neckline\/chest openings), and to refrain from displaying adornment, save the limited exceptions specified.<\/p>\n

Historical note.<\/strong> Both the wording of these verses (\u201cjal\u0101b\u012bbihinna<\/em>\u201d and \u201ckhumurihinna<\/em>\u201d) and historical reports indicate that Muslim women already used khim\u0101r<\/strong> (head\/neck covering) and jilb\u0101b<\/strong> (outer garment). The Qur\u2019an\u2019s injunction refined their use: in addition to covering the hair, women were to fully cover the neck, chest, and even lower parts properly.[6]<\/p>\n

\n

Beyond Dress: The Qur\u2019an\u2019s Emphasis on Chastity (\u2018iffah<\/em>)<\/h2>\n

Alongside legal boundaries of dress, the Qur\u2019an consistently commends \u1e25ay\u0101\u2019<\/strong> (modesty) and \u2018iffah<\/strong> (chastity). It instructs:<\/p>\n

    Lowering the gaze<\/strong> and avoiding illicit looks (addressed to women\u2014and emphatically to men as well).[7]<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Guarded speech:<\/strong> women should not speak in a soft, alluring, or provocative manner with non-ma\u1e25rams.[8]<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Dignified conduct:<\/strong> comportment should be modest and not draw improper attention.[9]<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u1e24ij\u0101b in Earlier Faith Traditions<\/h2>\n

    Modesty norms are not unique to Islam. Sacred texts of previous traditions also include teachings on chastity<\/strong> and female covering<\/strong>; even today, some Jewish and Christian communities maintain head-covering practices for women.[10]<\/p>\n

    An Important Note<\/h2>\n

    Islam is grounded in the inseparable twin authorities: the Qur\u2019an and the Ahl al-Bayt<\/strong>.[11] Many acts of worship and rulings are not exhaustively detailed<\/strong> in the Qur\u2019an alone. For example, prayer is commanded in the Qur\u2019an, but its rak\u2018ahs and many particulars come from the Prophet and the Imams. \u1e24ij\u0101b is similar<\/strong>: while the Qur\u2019an provides the principle and key directives, numerous details<\/strong> (e.g., specifics about adornment, boundaries, and practice) are clarified through the teachings of the Ma\u2018\u1e63\u016bm\u012bn (peace be upon them).<\/p>\n
