Question: Who is al-Mahdi?<\/h2>\n

Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his relief)<\/strong>\u2014also known as Imam al-Zaman<\/em>, al-\u1e24ujjah ibn al-\u1e24asan<\/em>, the twelfth and final Imam of the Shi\u2018a\u2014is the promised deliverer of the end times. Like the previous Imams, he is appointed by the Almighty and is the final successor of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).<\/p>\n

Biographical Details (Name, Birth, Parents, etc.)<\/h3>\n

Imam al-Mahdi was born in Samarra (Iraq), mid-Sha\u2018b\u0101n 255 AH<\/strong>,[1] the only son of Imam al-Hasan al-\u2018Askar\u012b<\/strong> (the eleventh Imam) and Lady Narjis<\/strong>, said to be a granddaughter of the Roman emperor.<\/p>\n

Titles and Kunyas<\/h3>\n

He shares the Prophet\u2019s name and kunya (Ab\u016b al-Q\u0101sim<\/em>), and is titled: Ab\u0101 \u1e62\u0101li\u1e25, al-Q\u0101\u2019im \u0100l Mu\u1e25ammad, al-Mahdi \u0100l Mu\u1e25ammad, \u1e24ujjat All\u0101h, Wal\u012b All\u0101h, Baqiyyat All\u0101h, al-Im\u0101m al-Munta\u1e93ar, \u1e62\u0101\u1e25ib al-Zam\u0101n<\/strong>, and others.<\/p>\n

Glad Tidings in the Qur\u2019an, the Prophet, and Earlier Imams<\/h3>\n

He is the very savior heralded by the heavenly scriptures who will establish justice and peace. The Qur\u2019an alludes\u2014indirectly\u2014to his advent: the end of shirk and disbelief,[2] the universal spread of the true religion,[3] the triumph of truth over falsehood,[4] the inheritance of the earth by the righteous,[5] and the empowerment of the oppressed.[6] Their complete fulfillment will be after his reappearance. The Prophet repeatedly foretold the twelfth Imam and his just rule,[7] and the earlier Imams (from \u2018Al\u012b to al-\u2018Askar\u012b) consistently announced his coming.[8]<\/p>\n

Al-Mahdi in Sunni Sources<\/h3>\n

Reports about the Mahdi are found not only in Shi\u2018i books but also in major Sunni collections: the Prophet said a man from his progeny will arise and fill the earth with justice after it has been filled with oppression.[9]<\/p>\n

His Longevity, Life, and Occultation<\/h3>\n

His Imamate began upon his father\u2019s martyrdom in 260 AH<\/strong> and continues to the present. By God\u2019s will\u2014like Prophet N\u016b\u1e25 and al-Khi\u1e0dr\u2014he has a prolonged life and is alive. Based on transmitted reports, for reasons including protection from assassination, testing people, having no pledge to any tyrant, and the sins of people, he lives concealed (ghaybah<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Concealment of a divine vicegerent is not unprecedented: Prophets such as Idr\u012bs, Y\u016bsuf, and M\u016bs\u0101 (peace be upon them) experienced periods of hiddenness. The Imam\u2019s occultation unfolded in two phases:<\/p>\n

  • \n

    Minor Occultation (al-Ghaybah al-\u1e62ughr\u0101):<\/strong> from 260 AH, during which he communicated with the Shi\u2018a through four special deputies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Major Occultation (al-Ghaybah al-Kubr\u0101):<\/strong> from 329 AH<\/strong> onward, ending specific deputation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    His Role in Guidance\u2014during Occultation and after Reappearance<\/h3>\n

    Even without direct access, he remains the Imam and guide. The Imams are intermediaries between God and creation in presence or absence.[10] Seeking nearness to God through the Imams is among the best paths.[11] In the Major Occultation, he commanded the faithful to refer to reliable transmitters of the Imams\u2019 teachings[12]\u2014those learned in religion, God-fearing, and free from worldly motives[13]\u2014for understanding the divine law.<\/p>\n

    Establishing Justice and a Universal Just Order<\/h3>\n

    His reappearance and uprising<\/strong> are certain; hence the frequent title al-Q\u0101\u2019im<\/strong> (the one who rises).[14] He will appear with supporters, establish a global just polity, and fill the world\u2014now rife with injustice\u2014with equity.<\/p>\n

    Effects of Belief in al-Mahdi<\/h3>\n

    Belief in the Imam brings hope<\/strong>. Despite trials, believers do not despair: they know their Imam prays for them[15] and that a day will come when true Islam prevails and peace encompasses the earth. Even in occultation, a heart-to-heart connection<\/strong> with the Imam is possible: he knows the state of his Shi\u2018a and cares for them like a compassionate parent;[16] believers speak to him and seek his help. Conscious of a living Imam who witnesses their deeds, they avoid sins, fulfill duties, and strengthen the bond with prayers for him\u2014an aid to preserving faith in the end times.[17]<\/p>\n

    Expectation (Inti\u1e93\u0101r<\/em>) among Humanity\u2014especially the Shi\u2018a<\/h3>\n

    Many religions anticipate a promised day and a savior. In Shi\u2018i teaching, awaiting relief (inti\u1e93\u0101r al-faraj)<\/strong> is a foundational doctrine and among the greatest acts of worship,[18] and believers are urged to pray earnestly<\/strong> for his advent,[19] for even a single person\u2019s sincere prayer can hasten relief. Reports state that God may rectify the affair of the Imam in a single night<\/strong>.[20] Whenever God wills, the promise will be fulfilled; the Imam will appear and bring global justice and tranquility.<\/p>\n

    In sum:<\/strong> al-Mahdi<\/em> is the designated, known son from the lineage of the Seal of the Prophets. The establishment of true religion and the deliverance from worldly oppression will reach completion through his appearance.<\/p>\n
