All of us have come across people who claim to be associated with the Ahl al-Bayt\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0and consider themselves as Shiites of Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\u00a0(PBUH). The truth is that it is easy to make such claims, but what is the criterion for differentiating between\u00a0true Shiites\u00a0<\/strong>and false claimers? This is an important issue which has been addressed by the Ahl al-Bayt\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0over and over, where they have explained the characteristics of\u00a0true Shiites<\/strong>.<\/p>

For example, in one of his statements, Imam Hassan Askari\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0has mentioned one of the important characteristics of Shiites, \u201dThose who are more familiar with the rights of their brothers (in faith) and are more diligent in fulfilling their rights, have the highest rank before Allah\u00a0(SWT). Those who are\u00a0humble<\/strong>\u00a0towards their brothers (in faith) will be considered as\u00a0Siddiqin<\/strong>\u00a0(the truthful) and the\u00a0Shiites of Ali\u00a0<\/strong>(PBUH)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>by Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u201d.<\/p>

Then, Imam Askari\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0referred to the tradition of Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0in this regards and said, \u201dOne day, a man and his son from the companions of Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0went to visit him. Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0stood up in front of them for the sake of respect, seated them at the best spot, and sat besides them while treating them with honor and respect. Then, he ordered for food to be brought to them.<\/p>

When they finished eating, Qanbar (Imam Ali\u2019s\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0servant) brought tub, a wooden jar full of water, and a towel for the guests to wash their hands. When Qanbar was about to pour water on that man\u2019s hands, Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0got up and took the jar from Qanbar to pour water on the man\u2019s hands himself. When the man saw this, he felt ashamed and said, \u201dO Amir al-Mu\u2019minin! Are you going to pour water on my hands while Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0is watching me?!\u201d Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0replied, \u201dTake your seat and wash your hands. Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0is watching you while a brother of yours is\u00a0serving<\/strong>\u00a0you, and because of this service, Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0will make the number of his servants in Paradise ten times as many as the population of the world and Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0will also increase the number of his properties in\u00a0Paradise\u00a0according the mentioned scale.<\/p>

So the man sat down, and Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0said to him, \u201dI ask you to wash your hands as if your were doing while Qanbar was pouring water on your hands\u201d. The man did so as he was requested. Then, Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0gave the jar to Muhammad Hanafyiah (his son) and said, \u201dO my son! If this man\u2019s son was here alone, I would have poured water on his hands myself. However, Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0does not like that a father and son be treated the same way – when they are present in the same gathering. Therefore, the father would pour water on the father\u2019s hands and the son would do so for the son\u201d. So, Muhammad Hanafyiah poured water for that man\u2019s son\u201d.<\/p>

Then, Imam Askari\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0said, \u201dSo whoever imitates and follows Amir al-Mu\u2019minin\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0in this virtue (humbleness), he\/she is a true Shiite\u201d.<\/p>
