Muslims are told that when giving in charity, they must not follow up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, since this act voids their charity. In this regards verse 264 of Surah Baqarah says, \u201c<strong><em>O you who believe! Do not render in vain your Sadaqah (charity) by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men, and he does not believe in Allah, nor in the Last Day.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p><p>So how should we help the poor? Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0answers this in verse 271 of Surah Baqarah, \u201c<strong><em>If you give alms openly, it is good, and if you hide it and give it to the poor, it is better for you.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<sup>\u00a0<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><p>Ali ibn Isa narrates the following from Ibn Aisha, \u201cI heard the people of\u00a0Medina\u00a0saying: \u201cWe lost\u00a0<strong>hidden charity<\/strong>\u00a0after Ali ibn Hussain\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0passed away.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p><p>There were several families in\u00a0Medina\u00a0who received help from Imam Sajjad\u00a0(PBUH), yet they were not aware where the help was coming from. Once Imam Sajjad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0was martyred, those helps were also cut.<sup>\u00a0<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><p>Ibn Sa\u2019ad, a famous Sunni scholar, writes, \u201cWhen a poor or needy would approach (Ali ibn Hussain\u00a0(PBUT)) he would rise immediately, help the person, and say, \u2018<strong>Charity first reaches Allah before reaching the one who asked for it<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<sup>.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><p>Imam Ali Ibn Hussain\u00a0(PBUT)\u00a0had a poor cousin. Imam used to go to visit him every night and give him some money while he could not see Imam\u2019s face.\u00a0That man used to say, \u201cAli Ibn al-Hussain\u00a0(PBUT)\u00a0does not consider his poor family members; may Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0punish him.\u201d Imam heard these words many times and never said anything; he continued to be anonymous with his patience. After Imam&#8217;s martyrdom, his cousin did not receive any charity and then realized that the generous man who used to help him was Ali Ibn al-Hussain\u00a0(PBUT). Thus, he went to Imam&#8217;s cemetery and cried there&#8230;<sup>\u00a0<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><p>Abu Na&#8217;eim, another Sunni scholar, writes, \u201cWhenever a poor approached him, he used to say, \u2018Blessing of Allah upon the one who takes bounties for me to hereafter.\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a> After he passed away, people realized that Imam Sajjad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0paid for expenses of one hundred families.\u00a0<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a><\/p><p>He sacrificed a lamb and asked it to be cooked whenever he fasted; then he would go to the kitchen near the sunset and say, \u201cTake this plate to this home and that to another.&#8221; Once the food was completely distributed, then he would break his fast with bread and dates.\u00a0<\/p><p>Indeed,\u00a0Imam Sajjad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0did all of this for the sake of Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0and hence Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0improved his image to an unsurpassed level amongst the people. Imam\u2019s enemies tried their best to hide his image in the society; but he became far more popular than they could imagine.
