Islamic teachings command Muslims not only to avoid inner impurities but also to maintain purity from every outward defilement. For the Noble Messenger (peace be upon him and his family) regarded cleanliness, like piety, as a universal, constant, and comprehensive duty. Just as the Noble Qur\u2019an says concerning piety: \u201cSo fear Allah as much as you are able\u2026\u201d<\/em> [1]<\/a>, the Prophet likewise said concerning cleanliness: \u201cSafeguard cleanliness and purity with whatever means you can, for the foundation of Islam is built upon cleanliness, and Paradise has been prepared for the one who is clean.\u201d[2]<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>

Preservation and observance of personal and public cleanliness and hygiene are emphasized in the Islamic tradition, and practical guidelines have been proposed in this regard.<\/p>

In various statements, the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Mu\u1e25ammad (peace be upon him and his family), spoke concerning cleanliness and personal hygiene, saying:<\/p>

\u201cIslam is pure, so purify yourselves, for none shall enter Paradise except one who is pure.\u201d[3]<\/a><\/p>

\u201c\u2026Cleanliness is part of faith\u2026\u201d[4]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cThe worst of servants are the filthy ones.\u201d[5]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cAllah despises filthiness and untidiness.\u201d[6]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cNo one should sleep at night with greasy hands\u2026\u201d[7]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cTrim your nails\u2026\u201d[8]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cWere it not difficult for my community, I would have commanded them to use the toothstick before every prayer.\u201d[9]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cTwo units of prayer performed with the toothstick are more beloved to God than seventy units performed without it.\u201d[10]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cUse the toothpick, for nothing is more detested by the angels than food left between the teeth.\u201d[11]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cOf the things of your world, fragrance is beloved to me, and the delight of my eyes is in prayer.\u201d [12]<\/a>
\u201cThe use of fragrance strengthens the heart.\u201d[13]<\/a><\/p>

He also said concerning public cleanliness and hygiene:<\/p>

\u201cKeep your courtyards and the surroundings of your houses clean\u2026\u201d[14]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cDo not pile up refuse behind your houses, for that is the dwelling place of devils (impurity).\u201d[15]<\/a><\/p>

\u201cDo not keep garbage in your houses overnight, for it is the dwelling place of devils (impurity).\u201d[16]<\/a><\/p>

Indeed, this was a selection from the precious counsels of the Messenger of Mercy, Prophet Mu\u1e25ammad ibn \u02bfAbd All\u0101h (peace be upon him and his family), regarding the observance of personal and social cleanliness and hygiene. His exhortation to one of his companions in this regard clearly illustrates this emphasis: \u201cO Anas! Observe purity and cleanliness more diligently, so that God may increase your lifespan.\u201d<\/em>[17]<\/a><\/p>
