After the martyrdom of Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH), Ma\u2019mun tried very hard to prevent the society from discovering that he had poisoned the Imam. He pretended to mourn the death of the Imam. The Shiite community however, had realized that it was indeed Ma\u2019mun who had martyred the eighth Imam. They were very hurt and upset for this realization. Hence, Ma\u2019mun knew his reign was in danger, and began to devise yet another plot against the Shiites.<\/p>\n

Ma\u2019mun pretended to love and care for Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH), the son of Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH). He planned for a forced marriage between his daughter and Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH), in an effort to\u00a0legalize<\/strong>\u00a0his government. He had done the same with the forceful deputyship of Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0during his lifetime. Ma\u2019mun relocated Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0from Medina to Baghdad in the year 204 AH (one year after the martyrdom of Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH)), and planned for the marriage of the Imam with his daughter Umm al-Fadhl.<\/p>\n

This marriage, which Ma\u2019mun insisted on, had a completely\u00a0political<\/strong>\u00a0motivation. Ma\u2019mmoon desired to obtain the following results through this marriage:<\/p>\n

1- Sending his daughter to Imam Jawad\u2019s\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0house gave him the ability to\u00a0closely monitor<\/strong>\u00a0the Imam\u2019s activities. Many historical sources have recorded incidents in which Ma\u2019mun\u2019s daughter spied on the Imam to her father.<\/p>\n

2-With this marriage Ma\u2019mun wanted to associate Imam Jawad (PBUH)with his palace which was full of unlawful activities, hoping to somehow involve the Imam with the corruption<\/strong>. He was aiming to distort the sacred image and infallible character of the Imam in the eyes of the public.<\/p>\n

3- Ma\u2019mun clearly aimed to fool the public; as he had seldom said: \u201cI opted for this marriage so that my daughter could bear Imam Jawad\u2019s child, and I would become the grandfather of a child who is related to the Prophet and Ali ibn Abitalib\u00a0(PBUT).\u201d[1]<\/a>\u00a0Thankfully, Ma\u2019mun\u2019s deception was without any result as Umm Fadhl never bore any child and all Imam Jawad\u2019s\u00a0(PBUT)\u00a0children were from his other spouse.[2]<\/a><\/p>\n

4- Ma\u2019mun wanted to prevent the Shiite community from uprising and show his\u00a0love to the Ali’s\u00a0<\/strong>(PBUH)<\/strong>\u00a0progeny<\/strong>\u00a0by means of this marriage.<\/p>\n

Since Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0\u2013without any doubt\u2013 knew Ma\u2019mun’s ill-intentions, and his role in the martyrdom of Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH), it is not too far off to say Imam Jawad\u2019s\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0main reason of accepting the marriage to Ma\u2019mun\u2019s daughter was an acceptance under pressure, since such marriage was only to Ma\u2019mun benefit and had none for Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUT).<\/p>\n

The life of Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0confirms the force imposed and extreme reluctance in his marriage with Ma\u2019mun\u2019s daughter, his life in Ma\u2019mun\u2019s palace, and his move to Baghdad. For instance, Hussain Makari who was one of Imam Jawad\u2019s\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0companions narrated: \u201cI went to see Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0in Baghdad; I saw his life and passed these lines in my head: \u2018Now that the Imam has reached a comfortable life, there is no way he will return to his homeland, Medina.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0sunk his head for a moment. He then looked up with great disappointment and said: \u201cOh Hussain, the barley bread and rough salt near the Prophet\u2019s shrine is much more pleasant for me than my current situation.\u201d[3]<\/a><\/p>\n

Accordingly the Imam however, didn\u2019t stay in Baghdad and moved to Medina with his wife, Umm Fadhl, and continued to live there.<\/p>\n

Thus, Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0was forced to live with the daughter of his father\u2019s murderer. Ma\u2019mun died in the year 218 AH and his brother Mu\u2019tasim replaced him. Mu\u2019tasim ordered the Imam to move back to Baghdad. Hence Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0entered Baghdad during Muharram of year 220 AH. Then Mu\u2019tasim along with Umm Fadhl and Ja\u2019far (Ma\u2019mun\u2019s son) plotted the scheme to kill the Imam. Umm Fadh finally poisoned her own husband, Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0based on the by her uncle and brother\u2019s insistence.<\/p>\n

This is how Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0was martyred at the end of\u00a0Dhi al-Qa\u2019da\u00a0in year 220; he was buried in Baghdad besides his grandfather, Imam Kadhim\u00a0(PBUH). Therefore, the marriage which was forced on Imam Jawad\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0to mislead the public and monitor the Imam at the same time had succeeded in its plot to removing the Imam from the path of the caliphs. The role of Umm Fadhl in martyrdom of the Imam is a proof for the deceptiveness of this marriage.<\/p>\n
