But what are the criteria which govern choosing our friends and enemies? How can we know what true love and hatred is, and towards whom they should be expressed?<\/p><p>Hakam ibn Utaybah, a companion of Imam Baqir\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0narrates the following story.<\/p><p>One day, we were sitting with Imam Baqir\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0and the room was filled with people. At this time an old man holding a long staff entered the room. He stopped at the door and said, \u201dPeace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah!\u201d Imam Baqir\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0replied to his greeting.<\/p><p>Then, the old man greeted all the audience and they replied his greeting. After that, he addressed the Imam\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0by saying, \u201dO son of the Messenger of Allah! Let me sit beside you\u201d.<\/p><p>Next, he continued by saying, \u201dI swear to Allah that I love\u00a0<strong>you<\/strong>; and I love\u00a0<strong>your friends<\/strong>; and my love towards you and your friends is not out of\u00a0<strong>greed<\/strong>. I swear to Allah that I hate\u00a0<strong>your enemies<\/strong>\u00a0and avoid them; and I take Allah as my witness that this hatred and animosity is not because of\u00a0<strong>any personal grudges with them<\/strong>. I consider lawful whatever you deem\u00a0<strong>lawful<\/strong>, and I consider forbidden whatever you deem\u00a0<strong>forbidden<\/strong>; I\u00a0<strong>await the relief<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Faraj<\/em>) of your family. O son of the Messenger of Allah! Is there any hope for my salvation?\u201d<\/p><p>Imam Baqir\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0replied, \u201dCome closer! Come closer!\u201d The Imam\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0seated the man beside himself and said to him,<\/p><p>\u201cO man! A person asked the same question from my father Ali ibn Hussain\u00a0(PBUH). My father responded by saying, \u2018If you die in this state, you will meet with the Messenger of Allah\u00a0(PBUH&amp;HP), Ali\u00a0(PBUH), Hassan\u00a0(PBUH), Hussain\u00a0(PBUH), and Ali ibn Hussain\u00a0(PBUH); your heart will be consoled, and you will become calm; you will be pleased and your eyes will be brightened. When your life reaches here (he pointed to his neck), you will face the angels responsible for registering your deeds with ease and pleasure. Moreover some things will happen to you in your life that will brighten your eyes, and you will be with us in an honorable position\u201d.<\/p><p>The old man became so excited after hearing this status that he wanted the Imam\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0to repeat his words. Thus, he said, \u201dO son of the Messenger of Allah! What did you just say?\u201d<\/p><p>Imam Baqir\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0repeated his statement. Then, the man said, \u201dAllah is great! O\u00a0Aba\u00a0Ja\u2019far! If I die, I will meet with the Messenger of Allah\u00a0(PBUH&amp;HP), Ali\u00a0(PBUH), Hassan\u00a0(PBUH), Hussain\u00a0(PBUH), and Ali ibn Hussain\u00a0(PBUH)? My heart will be consoled, my eyes will be brightened, and I will be pleased? I will face the angels responsible for registering my deeds with ease and pleasure, and will be with us in an honorable position?<\/p><p>He said these words and started crying loudly, and after a while, he bid farewell and left the room.<\/p><p>Imam Baqir\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0kept watching the man with a special attention as long as he was walking out. When he was gone, he turned towards the people and said, \u201dWhoever wishes to see a\u00a0<strong>man of\u00a0Paradise<\/strong>\u00a0may look at this man\u00a0<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>\u201d.<\/p><p>Indeed, as Imam Baqir\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0has taught us, these two great properties everyone has, namely love and hatred, become valuable only when they are in accordance with the Divine principles and logical criteria, not worldly intentions.
