According to Islamic thought, value is based on deeds. This is the person who builds up his\/her own character. Every person is judged, gains superiority, and reaches salvation based on his\/her deeds and actions. No one can rely on his\/her family ties (even someone related to a Prophet or Imams), social level\u00a0ethnicity, etc and give up work and effort. Similarly, it is against Islamic thought that one expects a good destiny for himself\/herself and considers himself\/herself superior to others in this world by relying on the mentioned factors. Islam has taught that the only way towards spiritual progress for a person is through his\/her\u00a0deeds<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0efforts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In their teachings, our religious Leaders have always introduced people to this principle; they have even taught their own family members not to rely on family nobleness to assume that they do not have to perform good deeds and not to create myths concerning religious leaders and their families.<\/p>\n

Imam Ali bin Musa al-Reza\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0was no exception to this rule. He would judge people based on their piety and good deeds. He never discriminated between white and black, rich and poor, and people from different tribes and races. He recognized\u00a0piety<\/strong>,\u00a0belief in Allah<\/strong>\u00a0(SWT), and\u00a0good deeds<\/strong>\u00a0as the criteria for superiority.<\/p>\n

Once a man told Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH), \u201dI swear to God that there is no one superior to you in terms of ancestry and lineage.”<\/p>\n

Imam\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0replied, \u201dPiety made them (my ancestors) superior, and obedience to Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0made them reach such a high status[1]<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another time a man told the Imam, \u201cI swear to God that you are the best of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0replied, \u201dDo not swear! Better than me is the person who is more obedient to Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0and more abstinent from His disobedience. By Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0this verse has not been voided: \u201d…and (we have) made you tribes and families that you may know each other; surely the most honorable of you with Allah is the one among you most careful (of his duty) (pious)…<\/strong><\/em>[2]<\/a>[3]<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The example of Imam Reza\u2019s\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0brother is one in which one can see clearly why family ties do not give one an automatic spiritual superiority over others.\u00a0 His brother \u201cZayd\u201d, due to his greed for position, did not accept Imam Reza\u2019s\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0Imamate and called people to himself.<\/p>\n

One day Zayd was brought to Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH). Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0said to him, \u201dO Zayd! It seems that the ignoble people of Kufa have deceived you by saying that Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0has saved the children of Fatimah\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0from the fire of Hell because He has purified her womb. What you have heard is only true for Hassan and Hussain\u00a0(PBUT)… If you believe that you and Musa bin Ja\u2019far\u00a0(PBUH), who obeyed Allah\u00a0(SWT), will both enter paradise, you have to be more honorable than him in the eyes of Allah\u00a0(SWT). By Allah\u00a0(SWT),\u00a0no one would reach the Divine awards except by obedience to Allah\u00a0<\/strong>(SWT)<\/strong>; however, you assume that you can gain reward by disobeying Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u201d.<\/p>\n

Zayd said,\u201d I am your brother and the son of your father.\u201d<\/p>\n

Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0replied, \u201dYou are my brother as long as you obey the commandments of Allah\u00a0(SWT).\u00a0Remember when Noah\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0said (to his Lord), \u2018My Lord! Surely my son is of my family, and your promise is surely true, and you are the most just of the judges<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u2019, but Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0replied, \u2018O Noah! He is not of your family, his conduct is unrighteous…<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0[5]<\/a>\u2019<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore, disobedience to Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0excluded him from the family of Noah\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0[6]<\/a><\/sup>.\u201d<\/p>\n

In this Hadith we see that Imam Reza\u00a0(PBUH)\u00a0considers obedience to Allah\u00a0(SWT), good deeds, and piety as the criteria for his and the other Imams\u2019 superiority. Furthermore the Imam informs us that the award or punishment from Allah\u00a0(SWT)\u00a0is solely based one one\u2019s deeds and actions.<\/p>\n

In our day and age how do we judge people, and what do we consider as the criteria for superiority?\u00a0 Wealth?\u00a0 Beauty?\u00a0 Power?\u00a0 Fame?\u00a0 Or do we even have a criterion at all when we judge someone\u2019s superiority?<\/em><\/p>\n

And most important of all, what do we consider as our virtues? What kind of behavior do we choose for ourselves? What are our criteria in life?\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
