Seyyed Morteza, in his book Ayoun al-Mu’jizat, narrates from Imam Ja’far Sadiq (peace be upon him), who said:
The people of Kufa came to the presence of Amir al-Mu’minin, Imam Ali (peace be upon him), and complained about the lack of rain and the drought. They said, “Ask Allah to send us rain!”
Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) turned to Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and said, “Get up and ask Allah for rain on their behalf!”
Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) stood up, and after praising and thanking Allah and sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), he recited this prayer:
“O Lord! O Bestower of blessings, and O Giver of goodness, command the blessed rains of the heavens to fall upon us, abundantly, frequently, with magnitude, drops by drops, and continuously, so that through it, the weakness of Your servants may be alleviated, and Your dead cities may come to life. Ameen, O Lord of the worlds.”
Before he had even finished his supplication, the rain of Allah’s mercy began to pour down. So much so that some Bedouins who had come from the regions of Kufa said, “I saw the rivers and streams swelling with water!”[1]
Indeed, that day passed, and Allah, in response to Imam Hussain’s (peace be upon him) supplication, made the people of Kufa indebted to him, sending His mercy and rain upon them through the accepted prayer of His servant. But years later, in the year 63 AH, the wheel of fortune turned again, and the people of Kufa found themselves once more facing Hussain ibn Ali (peace be upon him). Yet this time, as history attests, the people of Kufa and those of Sham killed the son of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), along with his family and companions, and even refused to offer a single sip of water to his infant son.
And the question will forever echo throughout history: “Is there any reward for good except good?”[2]
